Aluminum bedding block for Savage rifles

Well I got a Boyds Tacticool for one of my Savages with the DBM

I love the stock with the exception of there is barely any material between the bottom metal and the receiver.

I have noticed there is already a crack in the bedding material right infront of the front screw.

I want to put a full aluminum block in there to fix this problem, Whidden is out as I was asking questions about the block and the ability to machine some more material out for the DBM and the guy got really rude with me, so I am done with them.

I will have to do it all myself. I have access to a full machine shop, and was going to attempt to get everything in ACAD to full CNC it.

Has anybody else gone down this road?

Why would a guy @ Whidden's spend his valuable time giving away trade secrets to a competitor ????? ??? and you consider HIM to be rude?

[/quote] +1!!... Please explain, in detail, everything you've learned, every trick you use that you've invested time material and mental HP into over the past 25yrs. so that I can do it myself! I'll go ahead and post it on the internet so everyone else, can too. Ever wonder gunsmiths "come & go" so often?
 
I wasn't asking for secrets I was asking him if his would work, he said not for my application, I asked if it could to modified to he said it will not work for your application like I wasn't listening to him. Asked him if they would make one that would and I just got the sharp no. I don't know if I just caught them before there coffee or what. But I have gotten excellent support on them for other products. I'm on my own building it, either that or I will find an accustock to cut one out of. I have thought about calling Choate and see if they will sell me the aluminum section out of one of there stocks also.
 
Where did I even say I was asking him how to build it. I wanted to buy one from him for my gun is all I wanted from him.

I would rather buy one and finish this gun instead of spending a bunch of time on this but since the Whidden won't work and I can't any others making it is about my only option.
 
I wanted a wood laminate, and was not willing to wait the 12-16 months and considerably more money for a custom laminate. I was trying to keep weight down a bit (failing miserably at that...) Plus I managed to get one of the colored laminate tacticools. I really like the stock a lot.
 
I was considering installing the whidden block system in some of my rifles
but
I have 4 savages with wood stock -pillar bedded with Devcon
& one with a H&S aluminum bedded stock
the wood ones shoot every bit as well as my H&S
Devcon is amazingly strong & stable
I still may try one -I like to tinker (even when it aint broke )
I don't see how it could be that hard to modify
from sf to cf or blind to dbm- but I haven't tried it yet -...
 
The McMillan A2 that is made for a Savage does not come with an aluminum bedding block in it like the ones for Remington do. Therefore my buddy and I drill and installed Brownell Pillars in it and bedded it. My rifle is as accurate in the McMillan now as it has always been in my B&C Medalist A2 which comes with an aluminum bedding block in it for half the cost. A Widden Block is $75.00 which I would bet is less then what you will pay for a used Accu-stock. Buy one and see if you can make it fit, if it will not you could sell it for what you have in it. John Widden is easy to talk to , I'd get him on the phone and ask for his input. If you have the equipment get a billet of aluminum and build your own from scratch.
 
I think the thing with the Whidden block is it is not physically wide enough to accommodate a drop box magazine. I have started the drawings in solid works and ordered some material. So we will see what I can come up with. I have thoughts of making the bedding block and bottom metal all one piece. Since I am already drawing and going to make some chips. Once I get the drawings done I am going to send the files out to get 3D printed to verify fit form and function before getting the aluminum cut. I xray'ed on of the Accustocks and I don't think there is enough material in there to make it worth spending the time to cut the block out. I think they are taking credit for some of the plastic as structure with how little aluminum is actually in there.
 
What I did, very similar.

Buy a 1.25" diameter cove bit for your router. They are solid carbide to withstand the RPM's from a router, but they will mill aluminum very nicely in a mill.

The Savage action OD is 1.35". I would start with some 1.25" wide 6061 aluminum bar stock (already squared and trued) and measure and drill so my front action hole with pillar goes through and is as close to an exact fit to the recoil lug as you can make it. Short, no big deal, bed with devcon 10110. Long will not mate up at all.

After front action hole is satisfied, mill first pass at at .675 deep for center line of action. Back out 2 thousandths, go right 5 thousandths. Make second pass. Go left 10 thousandths. Make last pass. Trim back of block to clearance magazine.

High RPM's will get you a very nice shiny surface finish. I liked drilling my front pillar hole on the mill with a .5 end mill for that barely goes fit. You may have to sand the exterior of your pillars (I use 1/2 aluminum dowels) for barely goes fit.

Make sure stock is inletted for square block back to magazine from front of recoil lug.

Mate recoil block to action and recoil lug with front action screw and pillar. Should be 0 clearance. Again, short can be mated with devcon later.

Now bed action with recoil block just as you would a bare action with prep and devcon. This will bed the recoil block with the lug and action for 0 clearance.

Yes, I've done it, and yes, it works. Makes for a true drop in bedded action. Some will go so far as to rebed entire action to block and stock to make sure you have 100% coverage. Their choice. As you have bedded block with action and lug, they should be a perfectly aligned as possible.

Never said it would be easy though.
