adjusting receiver torque

I just tighten them down until I begin to feel resistance to them being tightened any more. I don't use a torque wrench but from having used torque wrenchs on action screws before I am guessing about 35 in-lbs.

I snug the front action screw, then snug the rear action screw. Then I go back to the front action screw and tighten it to approx 35 in-lbs and then do the same to the rear.

I then grasp the front of the stock and barrel with my thumb resting against the barrel and alternately loosen and tighten the screws to see if there is any movement of the barrel.
If there is no movement then I call it good - old school but it works very well.

If the rifle groups well I then put a dab of colored nail polish in alignment with the action screw slots so that I have a reference mark. By having the reference mark all I have to do the next time the action is removed is align the screw slot to ther reference mark and I will have the same amount of torque on the screws.

On Rem 700 42 front 40 rear M-7 35 front 15 rear works best for me.

I have two Model 12s actions and several barrels. They are all different but usually 30 on the front two and something less on the back works. Have one 30 bull that likes 35 on all three. Had an HS Precision three screw for awhile. HS recommended 40-40-40 and that is where it shot the best. Good luck.
