Accutrigger

Purchased a Savage 22-250 Varmint Thumbhole 12 BTCSS and understood the trigger could adjust to one pound or under being a varmint gun. This did not happen so where can I go for a trigger assy. that will do what I want. I have heard that there is a set trigger made for the savage?

Thank You
W.

Only the Target Action goes below 2 lbs. There are many guys on SavageShooter saying Bruno's make a good trigger for a Savage, I have never tried them.

+1 on the PTA

Accutrigger target is probably the safest bet. I changed mine to a Rifle Basics and then gave the darn thing away. It was unsafe at almost any weight as, instead of decocking when it released, it fired the gun on bolt closing.

Not once or twice...many, many times. I tried and tried then tried some more. Even had a very experienced gunsmith play with it. When I took that thing below say 10 oz. it went off when it darn well felt like it and no amount of beating, slam closing and safe testing could predict it was safe.

I'm back to a target accutrigger but had it shimmed so it was less sloppy. Do not know of any other viable alternative. As a result, I will not build any more target/benchrest rifles with a Savage action.

Go onto Savage shooter , the guy has a good write up on how to respiring the accutrigger. I had my standard accutrigger redone buy Larry Racine, ge got it down to a bit over a pound and very smooth break.

Can a target accutrigger be installed in place of a standard accutrigger?

From my understanding, I don't believe so which is why some owners go to Rifle Basics. Might want to check with a Gunsmith who KNOWS Savages or call Savage and ask them.

I believe the target accu trigger will interchange but without the target sear it doesn't make that much difference. They do make a varmint accu trigger that goes to 1 1/2 pounds (got mine from Jim Briggs , he sells a varmint action kit with this poundage trigger included). Sharp Shooters also sells lighter springs for the accu trigger. I agree the accu trigger is safer for a hunting type gun but I run rifle basix on all three of my target guns.

I've got my 12BVSS trigger down in the neighborhood of 3 ounces, but I had to remove the blade to accomplish that. And no bolt slamming either.
A very safe Savage accu-trigger can be made to break around 8 ounces with some work. Polish the trigger and sear, lube the pivot point, cut a coil or two off both springs.

I cut some coils off the adjusting spring. Got it down to 15oz. Not great, but way better than the 2lbs it was at. Putting that little bend in the spring to catch in the hole at the bottom of the receiver is a pain.

You should have called Rifle Basix, they would have replaced what is obviously a mal-functioning/damaged trigger. I have 2 Savage rifles both with the RB SAV-2 installed. Both set at 8 oz and I've never had a problem with them firing on bolt closing or any other problem for that matter.

Jay: My experiences mirror those of CaptainMal: after a while you have so much time and money invested, and it still is not safe or dependable, you just have to make the decision to cut your losses and walk away from it. Just not worth the aggravation, that includes lost points in match's when the gun goes "bang" when it should not. :(

I have 3 red blade triggers that have ben work on. They are 6oz or less excluding the blade pressure they cant slam fire because of the blade. They don't De cock when closing the bolt. That was fixed when the trigger was worked on. The rifle basic can and will slam fire if you try to make them too lite. I have a SSS supply jewel type that goes to 3oz .My self I like the red blade re worked trigger best. Larry

Jard makes a Savage upgrade that replaces the trigger – not the entire trigger assy – and sear. They are a set because the geometry is different than the factory sear/trigger and the sear is forged not stamped like the factory trigger.

Sharps Shooting Supply sells replacement triggers for savage rifles and in my opinion they are better than the Rifle Basic triggers. I installed the Competition Trigger on my Savage and the Evolution trigger can be adjusted down to even lighter pull weights.

I considered the SSS comp trigger before going with the RB. What decided for me were the answers I got when I asked on this and other forums for opinions on the two. Most who had tried both said the RB was a better trigger. As far as the evolution trigger goes they won't sell it to you. You have to send your barreled action in to them let them "true and time" it then install the trigger. That's $200 for the trigger plus $165 for the timing plus shipping and the worst part the wait time. From what I've heard that could be as long as 6 months. So that's ~$400 and a 3 to 6 month wait. In my opinion Ridiculous!

I built an F/TR rifle off a Savage #10 action, so it had the regular 2.5lb trigger. I installed the Rifle Basix SAV2 trigger at 13oz., and it's been a dream for 1000 rounds. Just recently I noticed that it will fire with the safety on, it was NOT like that when I installed it. But I have no issues with it on the firing line.

Just bought a #12BVSS 308, which will have the "varmint" trigger, which is supposed to go to 1.5 lbs. If it does, I'm keeping it.

Thats not the answer I got at Savage Shooter, the Rifle Basix trigger were prefered because they cost less. The SSS triggers are better and can be adjusted down much finer, and not have problems with the safety. As I stated above I installed the SSS Competition Trigger and NOT the Rifle Basix for that very reason. ;)

lol biged you got took. The RB costs more than the SSS comp model. But the price wasn't a consideration for me. You do realize that all the ppl at savage shooter are Fred groupies and would never say anything bad about him or anything he sells. You should have checked elsewhere for your references.

That's not to say the SSS trigger is a bad choice. It's personal preference for the most part. You like your choice and I like mine. We agree to disagree. I think that most of the ppl that have had problems with the RB trigger either had a early version of it or tried to take it down lower that it was designed to go. I must admit though, RB says the SAV-2 can be adjusted down to 4 oz, I couldn't get it down that low and feel comfortable with it. Mine are set to 8oz. But then I couldn't get the jewel trigger I installed in my remy down to their advertised minimum either.
