Accuracy load for 6/250

Currently using fed 205 lrp, 37.0 gr Varget, Sierra 70 gr HPBT match bullets touching lands. 7.5 twist barrel. Shooting for score target at 200 yd. Any suggestions?

How well does it shoot now?
On the two hundred yard target can clean, but only 2 out of 6 "x". Hodgdon has loads for 6/250 but wanted to short cut if possible. These are informal club shoots. It seems capable of greater accuracy and I was curious if others had played with this wildcat. Will try h4350 next as it appears to fill the case case closer to 100 percent. Bench rest for score, as I understand your question.

With a fast twist you also might get better accuracy with a heavier bullet, Might also want to try some Bart’s 6mm BR bullets 66-68 grain. Keep the bullet jump to a minimum. Varget is fine as is RL15 and 17.

A 7.5 twist barrel is better suited to the 105 bullets.... 70 gr. 13.5 would be better, 80 gr. a 12 twist. If it were me, I would set it back a chamber to 6 br. for something a little more accurate... It is capable zero groups at 100 and .2 at 200 yds with good bullets and a small rifle primer and burn a lot less powder.... jim

Nothing wrong with a 6/250. Methinks the bullets aren’t up to the task.

Barts, and Berger 68 grain flat based are out doing 95 gr Bergers for the time being at 200. Am going to try 88 Berger Varmit as well as 70 grain tipped Sierras. I've 3, 6mm brs. Just want to ring out the most accuracy at 200 with the 6/250 that I can. Once that's accomplished, will look at 300. Have a Brdx that shoots great if I do my part, so at 3 it is setting the bar for accuracy, interested in what 6/250 can do.

You are speak from a XTC. shooter, Bench rest is a different story....... but you are right about the bullets, He should call Bart and put his order in for some 105 Hammers..... jim

I’m not so sure that Benchrest requires a different chamber. If there had been the same level of development in the 250 or 22-250 brass as we’ve had in the BR brass over the years, there might not have been the BR in the first place. Now we have small primer Creedmoor in 6mm and other “bigger than BR” 6mm hammering 600 yard Benchrest. In reality, 100 &200 yard Benchrest has been developmentally stagnant for decades.

Thanks for the suggestion re: Barts. My ppc likes his 68 gr flat base for sure unless it gets windy. I'm going to exhaust the lighter bullet options at 200 before going to the 105's, only because I think they may be better suited at 300 given the 7.5 twist I'm driving. Thanks for comments.

Really? The groups I see the CM shooting at 600 the the br imp. is shooting at 1000. They are in the mid 1's now, at 600 .3 is small... 1.0 is ok.... jim

I did a 12 twist Kreiger and Barts 80 BT. @ 3250 in my 6BR imp.and they were as good as my PPC. like mid to low zero's. James from Tenn. took them to 500 and they were in the 1" range .... jim

Good to know. Am planning on getting some of Barts 80 bt and use them in 12 twist ppc. Wish now my 6/250 had a 12 or 13 twist.

So shot some Berger 88 grain varmint yesterday with H4350 and H4895, touching and .020 off at 200 yards. Much preferred the H4895, but short throat on rifle is forcing bottom of flatbase bullets into powder column, same with Sierra 95's, especially with H4350. Going to lengthen the throat to accommodate longer bullets since action is single shot Savage. Hopefully will have some progress to report in a few weeks. Cerosafe test confirmed short throat. Also, at 200 no difficulty with bullets keyholing or otherwise distorting target perforations.

That is weird, a fast twist and a short free bore. They won't keyhole because of the fat twist but if you get those little puppies fast enough they may blow up... jim
