9th Harmonic with an 18" barrel and Harrels Tuner

I have a Harrel's tuner installed on an 18" Feddersen barrel and was wondering if its possible to dial this in, as is, for the 9th harmonic. I have a new custom stock on the way and was just hoping to cut down on ammo waste by getting it pre-dialed before hitting the range.

You've spent hundreds on the tuner, stock, etc. Now isn't the time to try to save $20 or $30 bucks on ammo. Start on 200 and go both ways a turn at a time.

looks like i'm getting a final length of 20.064" I'll have to apply this tonight, as i don't have the rifle with me.

anyone know if this length is even possible?

So you are going to need 2.064" from the crown of the barrel to the face of the outer shell.
My Harrells tuner needed 2.720" and is at 284 on the 500 scale, shoots lights out.

So unless im just dumb.....but theres no possible way for me to dial the tuner to the correct position.

With the tuner dialed as far down as it will go...3 of 500....the end of the outer shell is ~2.4615" and 2.6350" to the end of the inner shell.

So...will this thing just flat out no work?

You can try a different # harmonic. The measurements you're looking for is probably in a different one. Or add a weight. With his formula its about length not weight.

Hi Keith,

That is not true about being only about length. how would it shoot if you add a 1-lb weight? even Tony once told me if length was the only factor you could use a card board tube to tune your rifle.

OK we've talked to Tony, Lee, and others about where to set the tuner. How about letting the barrel tell you where it wants to be tuned.

im going to try at the 5th and 7th (if I can tune for it)...

but i might also just build a 24" gun now, since this 10/22 and short barrel mess is kind of annoying, haha

Harrel works with weight. not the length as in the Purdy or JNL type tuners. I agree with the opinion that this is no time to try to spare ammo, so here's what I did. First I found the tuner position that shot the best using a variation of the Hopewell method. Yes it took a lot of ammo and was frustrating at times trying to find the nodes and then fine tune them, but in retrospect I had a pretty decent time and had a ready made excuse to do a lot of shooting which can't hurt your technique. Then, I bought a a bloop tube that screws onto the end of the Harrel, did the math for my rifle and cut the bloop to one of the harmonics that it was long enough to use. I started with the harmonic that left it the longest which was the 3rd harmonic and then fine tuned the length to compensate for the weight of the bloop. I don't see much difference with and without the bloop on it, so I plan to cut to the 5th harmonic and try that.
I am not giving you the actual numbers and lengths because it depends greatly on barrel length and thickness to get the Harrel setting right, and as Lee might tell you with my heavier barrel profile it took some other modification of the tuner to get the best setting. My numbers will not do much for you, but the process of getting to them might. Have fun with it and good luck.

I did that before with no real results. My issue is time. I dont have all day to spend shooting groups....i usually have about an hour or two, at most, to shoot.

But ill try to get something figured out, thanks gentlemen!!

i maybe wrong here.. but my understanding about barrels and tuners is that the shorter a barrel is, takes more weight to tune it.. and the longer a barrel is, the less weight it takes to tune it..

Hi Lee,
Yes its about weight , however his formula is about length as you know. Also we only have options from 1/4-2or 3 oz. that I'm aware of depending on the material used.
Just saying there were other harmonics to try. Of course, after trying multiple ones it would have been just as easy to use the Hopewell method starting at 200 as John mentioned.
