9mm shotshells

What is your opinion of the CCI 9mm 53-grain centerfire shotshells for pest control? I had been using a regular .22 revolver. I'm concerned about over penetration and/or ricochets. Thank you in advance.

I didn't know they had such a thing. I've got the shot cups for loading 38/357 shot shells, and they work pretty good. If loading your own, lower velocity is mobetta. All of the ones I've used are a twenty foot or less proposition. jd

I carry a couple of the cci shotshells on top of my regular loads when agate hunting out on the prairie. Can't say for sure the effective range, but I know they work pretty good 5-6 feet, which is all I have used them at.

i have been pulling the 9mm capsules and shortening them to install them in a 380.
I get about 3/4 of the shot in the 380 but it does a great job on snakes at 6 to 7 feet. they eject and no jams yet. maximum range??10 -12 ft for sure.

I am certain the 9mm would do better [ if it was just lighter to carry] and I just cant see the light shot being a problem over penetrating. shoot one into cardboard at 25 ft to check penetration. it may not penetrate. try the same for ricochets. put a cardboard up and shoot so they bounce into it. I bet you don't get much penetration after the shot hits the ground.

I carry a 22 mag daily with 2 shot shells up first and it gets more if a work out than the 380. it ruins a rattlemoccasins day-never need a second shot.

when looking for a snake shooter I would tear down the shot capsules and count the shot in the cci and federal ammo. the rimfire crimped shells had a lot less shot in them than the cci capsules and by the time I got the 380 loaded it had a lot more that a 22 mag capsule.

use your 9mm. it will be fine.

+1 for Ray the snake killer. He used the 22 mag in camp last year at our match in Pencil Bluff, AR
when a copperhead made a visit to our camp site. Impressed me enough that that I purchased a
a NAA Pug pistol in 22 mag to carry also. He knows from where he speaks!

I have used the 38/357 cal shot capsules in my 357 Mag revolver and they are very effective, I use #8 or #9 shot. What happens when you use them in an auto loader? Will they function the action? Is there any reason you couldn't load them long and manually load the 1st shot...... realize they wouldn't work in the magazine. I think I use 5+ grains of Unique in the 357 revolver, where would I start with a 9mm auto?

the 38 you buy is squared off and the loaded 9mm capsules are round to feed in a mag.

I pulled the 9mm and weighed the powder but that was a few years ago. it was somewhere around 4 grains but I have no idea what powder it was. l loaded a grain and a half less in the 380 and it would not cycle so I added another half grain and the action cycled. this was whatever powder cci used in the 9mm. too much and you will likely blow out the pattern bad.

load them single and start low then and add powder till it cycles. pay attention to col. the 9mm capsule is short.

I bought a box of the 9mm to load in my Beretta 92 after having a close encounter with mr. rattle berry while walking the dog out back. Have yet to come across another one to try them out. I chose the 9mm as that is what was in stock then, although the 38 would have been fine to load in my S&W 19.

No experience with a 9mm but loaded a couple mags of the 40 CCI shotshells in my Glock during a prairie dog shoot in the Dakota's. It was used for snakes. Killed a rattler that was too close to comfort while my son was prone shooting dogs. Shot from about 20 ft and killed it easily shot in the head. I'd recommend them in a minute and I'd guess the 9mm would be as effective. Shot in a sandy environment obviously no ricochets occurred that we're unsafe to us.

20 feet away...... I would have thought that would be maximum range. My 38/357 home loads are very effective at 10-15 feet. Going to try cutting the 38/357 capsule down and single load in the 9mm. I'll start at 4 grains of Unique.

The Judge is one wicked close range snake medicine delivery system for both kinds of snakes. Crawlers and walkers. That special self defense ammo with the 45 cal disk stacked with the BB shot payload would be wicked from the 2 to 10 feet average defense distance on a walking snake. The small shot loads will get the job done on the crawling snakes for sure. I have a 10" barrel T/C Contender with the 45 Colt - 410 shotgun barrel and I used it as my snake gun for the boat while fishing in the cotton mouth infested east NC water ways.

Guessing. Didn't tape it off. Could have been 15'. Hell, could have been 12. Again wasn't measuring. My son was prone and shooting and had ear protection on. I didn't since he was shooting a 17 HMR. I heard the rattler rattling and he was way too close to my son. The 40 shotshell did it's job very well killing the snake pretty much instantly.

Good reason to use amplified hearing protection. You actually hear better with it on. Only closes down at the shot.

I have used both crimped 22 LR shot shells, CCI 22 LR, CCI 22 Mag, CCI 38/357 shot shells and my own "home made" 38 ones. ALL work. Best to have something with you than nothing. My S&W Governor would be better for sure but it's too large to reasonably carry. That's the rub. Bigger is better but bigger gets left in the house, truck, or whatever because it's too big. Same can be said for many concealed firearms. Too big and you tend to leave it behind where it's there and not with you when you need it.

The tiny NA Arms revolvers just seem to always be there - boat, shorts, beach, motorcycle, church etc. Better to have than to have to go get something.

Yes I had electronics on that trip but only one pair. My rule for my 12 year old son was ALWAYS have it on regardless of what's being shot. Now I only own electronic muffs. I think revolvers would be best for that shotshell ammo. I had no issues in my Glocks but feed issues could result with the boxed type noses.

What size shot is in the store bought capsules for 9mm and 10mm? I think they use #12 shot in the 22 shot shells, seems like #12 would be pretty small and lose energy quickly. I have CRS, but think I remember hearing 22 rat shot (#12) won't kill a rat an more than 10 feet???????

Load anything with less than an 18" barrel with shot here in the peoples republic of loonie-ness, and you have a short barrel shot gun, then you get to turn all your firearms in, and the 2nd no longer applies to you. They transcend stupid in Sacramento.

We used to make people scratch their heads when we would shoot the old returnable Coke bottles at any distance with .45 acp and .38 snake shot with no results what so ever. In fact in the 1920's Peters made a .45 acp load that would function in a Thompson for crowd control. As a young guy I had some old factory .45 acp cartridges with the shot in a bullet shaped paper cartridge.

They pretty much all killed snakes for us because a snakes head isn't exactly armored.
