8mm mauser mishaps

My older brother who is just now getting into reloading called me last night and said he took the husquavarna out to shoot (it was my dads rifle) and first round shot no issue 2nd round shoots but when he ejects he pulls the bolt back on a case head only. Total separation. I told him to take it to a GS as it sounded like the headspace was off. But then I find out hes using 30-06 brass cut down and necked up to 323. Any ideas? Its a mauser 98 action and douglas premium barrel.

Have the head space checked, buy some 8 x 57mm Mauser Brass if you are going to shoot reloads. If the head space is OK, 3rd Generation Shooting Supply has Win. 8 x 57mm brass in stock. Re-forming brass to another cartridge is not for a novice reloader. Who knows the condition of the .30/06 brass that was used for this. Ya', it's all pretty simple, IF ya' know what your doing to begin with.

They have a tool for that . It resembles the rear of a case with an expanding neck . Very common military issued ( reproduction ) . It should come right out .
Check Brownells , headless case removal .

The Simple way. Use a pistol cleaning rod that does not have a rotating handle. Attach a bronze brush, insert it in the chamber (push in hard) pull out.
Thanks Jr, supposedly he tried that. He found a broken shell extractor kit. He was more curious to what caused it in the first place.

When I remove a separated case from a chamber the strong get weak and the weak pass out. I an very careful: I have screwed tapper taps into the case, the tapered tap has as many as 8 starting threads.

Something wrong with the head space; for me that would be the chamber because my cases do not have head space. I off set the length of the chamber with the length of the case from the shoulder to the case head.

Back to head space; I have fired 8mm57 ammo in one of my 8mm06 chambers, to save those that know how to determine the difference in length between the two chambers I will try and save you time. the difference in length between the two chambers is .127", I know; there are many reloaders that do not have a clue but when I pull the trigger on an 8mm57 round in one of my 8mm06 chambers the case has .127" clearance.

I know, reloaders are told the case, powder, bullet take off for the front of the chamber when the firing pin strikes the primer. That does not happen on my 8mm06 Mausers, if it did the case would separate between the case head and case body. When I pull the trigger my shoulder and case body does not move, I know the shoulder does not move because of the length of the neck on the ejected case.

I have killer firing pins, my killer firing pins crush the primer before the case, bullet and powder know their little buddy, the primer has been crushed.

I got onto him a bit about that. I sent him a link with 8mm brass on sale and told him to buy some or send the rifle back to me.

A tight extractor would tend to hold the case head to the bolt face?

And that is it? That is all there is? There is nothing before and nothing after?

A man built 4 magnificent rifles, he made the reamer etc., when finished he went to the range and had 5 case head separations out of the first 10 rounds fired. I told him I thought fire forming was a bad habit. I suggested he form first and then fire. I also told him I could have gone to his shop and determined if case head separations was likely, I also told him I could have met him at the range to correct the problem before he fired his cases.

He used Springfield and Remington 03s to build his 7MM wildcats.

We have a forum full of bumpers, they claim they bump the shoulder back .002" with impunity. And that is it? That is all there is. There is nothing before and there is nothing after "That is all there is".

Not quite; the bumpers claim they do all of this with a cam over press with no mention or adjusting the cam over press. Adjusting the cam over press to sized a case is different than adjusting the non cam over press and they always omit/ leave out the part about the cam over press being a bump press; and they all claim to be bumpers.
