8mm Mauser - Rebarrel?

If you can't see anything wrong with the rifle on the outside a borescope will be your friend in this case.if you can't keep a group in a 18" circle it sound's pretty bad.as Shortgrass said all that corrosive ammo and may be no maintenance aswell won't do it any favours.

I don’t know if you followed it, but I just did a complete custom project on a vintage 98 Mauser. I think I learned everything about these there is to know, short of taking to a metallurgical lab and finding out the exact composition of the steel used. My action was the 1908 model, probably manufactured between the Wars.

If you go 30/06, keep in mind that you will be limited to a certain over all cartridge length, as the magazine is really designed for the 7x57 or 8x57 case length, which is a little shorter than the ‘06.

I chose 280 Remington, mainly because I knew I could use 240 grn bullets at a velocity in keeping with the pressure restrictions on these vintage military actions, which is around 50,000 psi in a .473 bolt had case.

If you go ‘06, there is no reason you can’t shoot a good 150 grn bullet at 2850 fps and still get them to feed and eject just fine.

Go back and read my thread. I put quite an effort into the project, and it turned out nice within the constraints of these actions.

If he has a standard 98 action
That m48 barrel won’t fit without machining that little tit off the breach
That’s unique to the yugo
You know more specific details than I. Mine went on a VZ-24. Had my LGS perform the install. I was just happy to get an NOS quality barrel. The old one was very rough and corroded. Thanks for sharing that detail. I think I understand what you are referring to.
Best regards, Peter.

If you are going to have to rebarrel the rifle, I would go beyond just a standard rebarrel and make it a project to become something you have always wanted. You have a rifle action that you can do almost anything with.

Turn it back into a K98 type setup
Make yourself a 1903a4 ish setup.
Do what Jackie did and make it the slickest sporter your have seen.

Basically make it a project that gets you excited.

I have a turkish mauser in 8x57 that I have saved for a similar purpose. The problem I have is my plans change monthly for it.

Got my borescope. It’s not pretty in there. This is 25 rounds after I cleaned the bore “mildly” when I received the rifle.

10 miles of bad road. If you go the easy route with the Yugo NOS barrel on eBay, know that they are the later .323 diameter. Depends on what you want to do with the rifle.
The one on the right is one of the eBay barrels. Polished prior to installation, installed by LGS, blued at home.

Again, this is not my rifle. I’m just helping a friend. I’m sure he’s going to retire this one to the back of the safe. He’s not a big tinkerer and enjoys his firearms as they come from the factory. To each his own.

Although maybe I can talk him out of it and this could become my next project…..

Thanks for all the input guys. I will report back if it comes my way.

Yeah, looks pretty bad. I had my dad's 8mm mauser to a smith a bunch of years ago to drill and tap for a scope base. That smith told me it was the worst bore that he'd ever seen. He offered to rebarrel it when we were ready. That rifle shoots great. I worked up a half decent load after trying several different powders. There's a few powders that it DIDN'T like at all! It will clover leaf three shot groups at 100 yards. I went back to that same smith and showed him a few targets. He told me whatever I do, Don't ever clean that barrel or you'll ruin what you have! HAHA
I wonder what's going on with your rig? Shouldn't be an 18" group :O
