7WSM vs 7 Remington mag.

From an accuracy standpoint which is the better cartridge? I am looking for a rifle with a bit more range and punch for some of my high and open country hunts. Range will not exceed 800 yards since that is the limit of my accuracy.

Check out the bulletin about the Shehane. I run the RSAUM because of the powder reduction/barrel life but the Shehane looks even better!

If you haven't read the article about Ric Horst's 7mm WSM hunting rifle, you should:

WSM, if you long throat for the long action.

If you run the WSM short - meaning at 2.86" COAL, then 7 Rem. Mag is my choice. The 180 class bullets simply eat too much case capacity when running the WSM at Short Action length COAL.

Are you running Ric Horst old site now? He was out our way (Colorado) for about yr and I was surprised that he didn't own that guest ranch.

You can build an accurate rifle for either. If you are a hunter, you know that range, wind estimation, bullet construction and placement are the essential incredients for success. You are splitting hairs between the two that essentially mean nothing in a hunting rifle.

+1

If you are planning to run heavy 180+ bullets then build it on a long action. If it is in a long action why not go the full monte and build the 7mmRM. You get more case capacity to run the heaviest bullets in class. If it's a hunting rifle then barrel life is not really an issue. My F-TR rifle may see 2000 or more rounds in a yr, but my hunting rifles see what 10 maybe 15, most of that load work up. After that I shoot a few groups and a few animals a yr. A good barrel will last you decades.
