7saum and 180eldm

Anyone running a 7saum with the 180 eldms? With the 7.5 twist it's showing a bc on par with 338 cal bullets.

Tried them, and they sucked. Berger 180's hammered. Never looked back. We had a thread on here about them blowing up if pushed too fast too +3050fps.

This is good to know. Do you shoot it elr distances?

They not even close to a 300 grain Berger. BC is about equivalent of the 180 Berger and I like them better in a 9 twist or 8.5 but sure don't need a 7.5 twist.

Any of the heavy 7mm's give 90% of the Lapua at 50% of the cost. A 2 mph wind error at 1k is a matter of inches between the two.

Lapua??? 2 mph, yes it’s close, 10 mph , not as close, but if this is about ELR , say 2000 yards then the difference is not that close!

Just addressing the OP's concern... all the heavy 7mm's shoot identically to the LM within the realistic useful range of the 7's. The important thing to keep in mind is just because a manufacturer posts a mind blowing BC, it isn't necessarily different than essentially any other similar weight option out there. Run the numbers and decide for yourself. Just try to not make 10 mph wind errors.

2000 yards isn't in the discussion, as that distance is beyond the useful range of the LM too... not to say that the slug won't fly that far, it's just the wrong tool for the job out there.

*Edit to add- a 2 mph wind error at 2k with the 180 is a miss by 1.6 mil, with a 285 gr 338 with mv 2750 it's 1.5 mil. At 2k that's within most folks POA error band.

My 2 cents.. I have a 7 SAUM with a ridiculously long freebore and also 30"barrel. I can throw the 180 Bergers at 3050fps. I also point the bullets, which gives me a +-4% increase in their BC. That puts them roughly in line with the Berger 215 hybrid, BC - wise. Getting the 215 Hybrid up to 3050 (to equal the wind drift between the two) necessitates a very large caliber (300NM) and 85gr of powder, and lots of recoil.

My experience is that the larger 30 Cal bullet is only worth it if you are shooting 1 mile plus on a regular basis. Inside of that, the 7mm has the same windage at less recoil and less $$$.
