That is one great thing about the 7MM08. It works well for hunting with a bunch of different bullets and powders. There are a lot of ways to get there, as I wrote I didn't experiment long and it's been a number of yrs.
I thought about the new 6.5 staball powder it seems to get really good velocities in the 7-08
I’ll beg to differ on that, running a 140 Hunting VLD with RL 17 from a 22” Obermeyer bbl @ 3000fpsH4350 with a 139SST, or 140gr BT is perfect.
The 48.5gr seems a little high to me.
With how long of a barrel?
Not a 22" hunting barrel, your not!
It can be done with 16 and 17. 3002 and 3011 fps respectively with a 22” Douglas.I’ll beg to differ on that, running a 140 Hunting VLD with RL 17 from a 22” Obermeyer bbl @ 3000fps
140’s are not my preference in a 7-08 for hunting, just stating they can be pushed to 3000 fps. And you are correct, a deer doesn’t know the difference but if you find an accurate load at max charge, why not use it ?Since this is not a "long range" set up per se, the deer does not know if it was hit at 2650 fps or 3000 fps.. 139 gr Hornaday Spire Point/ Interlock has worked well for me for close 60 years.
