7mm08 Coyote Bullet

I am about to start Coyote hunting on my friends property. I am looking for a bullet for my Savage 7mm08 that will be setup for Coyote hunting only. It has a 22" barrel with a 1 in 9.5 twist. I originally bought the rifle for deer but ended up with the same caliber in a Tikka. I have the Tikka setup as my treestand deer rifle with 140g sierra pro-hunters.

I will not save pelts, this rifle will be to eradicate them from the property. Shots will be @ 200-300 yards 99% of the time. I have an AR-15 and a shotgun for close range 100 yard shots.

What bullet would you guys recommend me looking at and what grain. I see the Sierra 100gr HP, Speer 110gr TNT are both labeled as Varmint bullets with @ 3000 fps. Or, would a 120g bullet be more ideal?

Well, you never know at what range you will see one, so I like the lighter flatter shooting bullets. My favorite was the Speer 115 grain HP. But, like most other things these days that actually work....they had to quit making them. These bullets had a big open hollow point and I don't know why, maybe it was just for me or my rifle, but they were dead zero accurate.
I shot some of my best groups ever out of anything with these bullets.

The Nosler 120 grain Ballistic Tips shoot, Sub MOA in my TC Contender 21" Rifle, in 7X30 Waters and easily destroys, Water Jugs with, a pretty good, BC ( my favorite, back country, Deer bullet for this, light weight, Rifle ).
Sierra also makes, a nice 100 grain, HP Varminter # 1895 for even less recoil if using at, under 300 yds or so ( BC is lower ).

I like the 100gr Sierra Varmint.
That out of 7mm-08AI, 284 Win, 280 Rem, 7mm Rem Mag.

My prefered coyote medicine is 90gr BlitzKing out of my 250 Savage and 257 Roberts.

You should be able to push those 110 TNTs close to 3200fps with Varget based on Hodgdon load data. That sounds like a pretty wicked coyote round to me.

I like the Nossler 120 BT. It is excellent on thin skinned game at 7mm-08 speeds. All bullets mentioned are lights out coyote medicine. The right one is the one that shoots the best in your rifle.

I would use your Tikka and the 140 gr sierras. All the More practice , more better and more comfortable you will be when the deer of a lifetime comes along.
After all, you said you were not saving hides.

Hornady's 120 Vmax is a fine start. Especially if you do not want to preserve the hides. Stops them hard. Gotta believe Noslers Ballistic tips in the 120 would be very close in performance if not identical.

Winner...those 120 VMaxes are a Rockchuck and coyotes worst nightmare. Much more explosive in my experience that 120 BT. 3000 fps is easy with a variety of powders.

120g Nosler ballistic tips are very, very tough bullets. We have killed a lot of deer with them over the years.

120g V max would be my first choice, and I bet they would blow the whole azz end of of a coyote if your leade was not far enough with them on the run or trot.

Another great choice would be the 110g TNT.

4895ish powders on both of these powders should Rock!

I am gonna start with the 110g TNT speers/varget and see if I can get it to shoot. I tried 3 factory loaded Hornady ammo when I first got the rifle and 4" was the smallest group I could get @ 100 yards. I will post up the results when I get everything ready to go.

For ground hogs it's all about accuracy but I'm sure velocity numbers could be well into the 3000s with 120s from an 08.
