Another coyote

While I was out scouting for mule deer today, this silly coyote decided to stop and look at me:

Offhand, from 154 yards, with a 115 grain Berger at 3200 fps mv from my .25-06 Rem 700 CDL. It's a great coyote and mule deer rifle!

Wow, that is an awesome October coat.

Where about's do you live? Our dogs are still a bit ragged.

Nice looking gun too, I like the "classic look" in field arms!

Do you use those 115 Berger's on deer? If you do how do you like them? The 25-06 is the best deer killing rifle round I have ever squeezed the trigger on and I have squeezed a lot of triggers on a lot of deer. I have never tried the Berger bullets in my 25-06. Do they work through you magazine? What powder/load etc. are you using to push them 3200 fps. I loaded up and tried on paper some 30 ca. 155 VLD Berger's in my 30X47HBR and they were just down right accurate at 100 yards. Five shots .357 outside to outside group if you take out the bullet diameter that makes .049 for my first try and I was using a heavy cross hair scope on 12 power.

This is the first year I've tried the Berger VLD's for hunting. Obviously, they work great on coyotes - if you don't want to save the hide. The other side of this coyote looked pretty bad. I have not yet used them on deer, but our mule deer season opens in a week and I sure hope to have a report on their use... We'll see. Sometimes I get a deer, sometimes I don't.

Yes, they feed fine from the Remington magazine. I load them relatively long compared to my usual 100 grain loads.

Built my load off one I found in Hodgdon's data for the 117 grain Hornady, I just substituted the 115 Berger, and worked up to the max listed load. No problems with pressure at all.

Winchester brass, neck sized only in Wilson dies.
Federal 210 match primers
Hodgdon Retumbo at 60.5 grains, listed as max by Hodgdon)

I've likely set the scale & powder measure a little differently each time I've loaded these. The first time over the chronograph, the load averaged 3215 fps. This past time, not long ago, it averaged 3188 fps. I didn't notice any change in accuracy or bullet drop at 300 yards.

This isn't a match rifle, just a factory built Remington 700 with the rough 24" sporter barrel, but it shoots a bit under MOA at 300 yards easily enough with these bullets or any other bullet I've tried. Accuracy is on a par with the Sierra Gamekings I've used, and a little better than the 100 gr Barnes TSX bullets I've used to take a couple of mule deer bucks.

I just have a fixed 6x Leupold scope. It's working well for me. I hunt mostly in central Washington, from Yakima north to the Pasayten Wilderness. This coyote was shot in Douglas County.

Regards, Guy
