7mm Venturan ????

Ok guys, I am not a reloader, so I come to the experts. I have the oppurtunity to purchase a rifle in 7mm Venturan, it was built by Ralph Payne. Build was based on an FN Mauser action. I was actually able to contact Ralph's son who is a gunsmith as well and he was able to find some notes from the testing of the exact rifle, it is a pretty nice looking old mauser sporter. Have any of you ever heard of this cartridge, if not what can you tell me from the attached photo of the testing? Sorry for the sideways photo!

Looks like a 7 Weatherby Mag Short?

Think of it as you buying a stock and action only for a re barrel project.

If you are not a reloader, the above is very important, and you did not state if the dies came with the rifle?

I have located a set of dies for 7mm venturan and my father in law reloads so I could make it work. The rifle will come with 100 rounds as well.

J Pete, buy it for the stock and action, have a great gunsmith on this site put a barrel on it for you!

Get it cheap is the main thought. Having someone else do your reloading on a unknown wild cat caliber is questionable at best.

How much are they asking for the rifle?

$800, I have a soft spot for Mauser sporters, my Grandpa had a few and I inherited one.

Here is the item number as it is up for auction: 895437319

There are several photographs on this auction. Their description though is faulty.

It's appearantly made off of the 7mm Rem Mag case. See above pictures.
So not necessarily a "barrel burner".
I'm wondering if the notes are correct?
Maybe 58-59 gr of 4831 instead of 68-69gr?
Would make more sense if based off the 7mm Rem Mag case.
Otherwise it's loaded HOT as all get out!

It's more fun to do some logical comparative 'what-ifs' than to simply try to make a case against aberrant numbers.

The brass used by the gunsmith was .338 Winchester magnum with a FL case capacity of 86 gr. of H2O.
The OAL of the modified case is 2.235" as written in the log.

By juggling some dimensions and capacities, I found that the 7x61 Super S&H was extremely similar by capacity. Reasoning was found that the .338 WM has a larger shoulder diameter 0.491" while the 7x61 Super S&H is 0.469" at the shoulder. This comes down to about 77.6 gr. of H2O for the 7x61.

Using the CIP load length of 3.268" to achieve parody with the 140 gr. Sierra SP you wind up with plenty of room for the 68 grains of what we might 'assume' to be H-4831. The load pressure is within the normal expectation of modern cartridges in modern actions.

Enjoy!;)

OP is buying a used rifle, no history, some loading notes that do not indicate a particularly accurate barrel, but sufficient for short range hunting.

With the notes posted on the box, 600-800 rounds and the best life are gone from the barrel, and more than likely 1200 rounds the barrel is toast for accuracy work.

It maybe prudent for the OP to consider that he is buying an action and a stock as a platform for a new barrel, then it makes sense IF $800 is what he is willing to pay for the action/stock.
