7mm mauser? anyone??

LRCampos - yes, you're right, it was defintely the Model 1908. Oh dear, you make me feel quite nostalgic for this type of rifle. If a good long version turned up here tomorrow, I'd be strongly tempted! As well as the long barrel format and the '98 action, the other thing that attracts me is that this rifle kept the big ugly, straight-out-the-side bolt handle and grasping knob like the very early infantry (long) rifle models. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and while I initially thought it looked very clumsy, I got so used to seeing the bolt handle of my Boer 1895 out of the corner of my right eye that I came to think all Mausers should look like that! I had a really nice interwar era 8mm Persian Mauser long rifle made by BRNO (or was it FN? Memory suffers with age) for a year or two, very similar to the 1908, but I never liked the 8X57mm cartridge nearly as much as the 7mm - too much recoil and never as accurate - so I didn't keep it long despite it being beautifully made and finished and in mint (actually probably never used) condition.

PS is the later, shorter 7mm Brazilian military cartridge (7X49mm aka 7mm Liviano) used much in the country by civilians for target shooting and hunting? As I understand it, this cartridge is a shortened 7X57mm, not an early 7mm-08 based on the .308W?

Sorry, but I never heard about a "shorter 7mm Brazilian military cartridge".
Most of the 7mm Mauser was modified by the government, with a .30 barrel and .30-06 and .308win chambers. Others are still kept (some in unfired condition) original in 7mm Mauser.

In South Africa, there is the 7mm Tombi, a 7X57mm modified to better suit their powder. But in Brazil there is no other 7mm Mauser calibers.

Ah - interesting. It was Brazilian designed for the IMBEL manufactured version of the FN FAL automatic rifle, but maybe wasn't adopted by your country. It's also known as the 7mm Venezualan, so I may have got countries mixed up. Rather than neck the 7.62 NATO case down and make a 7X51mm or early version of the 7mm-08 Remington, it is allegedly a shortened 7X57mm with a shorter case than the NATO cartridge.

Anyway, thanks for the response. It's great to hear the 7X57 is still so widely used and appreciated with you in Brazil. Over here in the UK, our old .303" is virtually a handloading only proposition now for most shooters as imported America cartridges all have expanding bullets and they're not permitted to be purchased or used by target shooters. Hardly anybody (if actually anybody) uses the cartridge for deerstalking (hunting) these days either.

best wishes,

This topic was a good read, I hunt here in Canada with a Remington 700 Mountain rifle in 7x57 Mauser. I handload my ammo and the accuracy is superb, the velocity over the chronograph is 2840 feet per second with a 140 grain Nosler partition bullet. Last years mule deer fell to one well placed shot at 130 yards, no bullet was recovered. The 7x57 is excellent in its original configuration and needs no improvements to be easily one of the worlds best cartridges.

Why dont we hear much about the 7mm mauser chambering? I am always thinking about different things and different chamberings and while i was cleaning out the safe i found a box of remington 7mm mauser ammo. Does anyone even make brass for these anymore? It looks a bit small for long range work, but what if someone was to improve the case by blowing it out and making a 40 degree shoulder? This probably is a big old waste of time, as i would assume getting quality brass for such a thing is non existent? Anyone here shoot the 7mm mauser, has anyone ever wildcat this cartridge? Just curious! I like that it has a long neck, i kinda think thats a good thing?? Lee

After doing some measuring isnt this mauser case the same a 6mm remington? I dont have a 6mm remington here to compare, but if memory serves me correctly they are very similar.
It's a very accurate cartridge and Norma makes brass for it.
