7mm FTR cartridges...

What's the difference between the Shehane 284 and the 7.6.5 cartridge? I am coming late to the dance and see the same basic specs.

If you are going to shoot 600y but never going to shoot 1000y, use 223. If you ever plan to shoot a 1000y match, choose 308 with 0.180" freebore.
I shoot .223 at 600 yards and have even posted a 598-36X, beating the F-Open guys on some relays. I’m launching the 85.5-gr Berger at about 2,800 fps, while my friend runs the 185 Jug around 2,600 fps in his .308. The .223 actually holds better in the wind thanks to its higher speed, but at 1,000 yards the main drawback is the higher SD — that’s what causes the vertical spread and occasional high-low misses.

Some people avoid the actual question. Yes, 7mm cartridges are only allowed in open class. But to your question, the Shehane and 6.5 PRC necked up to 7 are about identical capacity. However, some feel that the shorter fatter case is more efficient. I’ve never used either, so no opinion on them.
