7MM-08

I have a chance to buy a (older model) Remington 700 BDL, chambered in 7MM-08.
It has a LA and a Remington heavy barrel. Triggers pretty light and shoots great.

Anybody out there shooting one a regular basis?

It's a long action!? That's odd.

I went to a 7-08 from a 308 for my general purpose hunting rifle. Shoot 140s at close to 2900 it will shoot deer as far out as you would ever need to shoot a deer. I like mine a lot.

Had one I built for the wife to shoot. After she had a baby, deer became a lot cuter so she didn't need it any more....I turned it into something else. It was a great shooting rifle. The 7-08 offers a great mix of flatter shooting with good terminal performance.

If it's a LA then it didn't come with a 7mm-08 bbl from the factory unless it was an older custom shop order.

As far as it being a LA.
From what I've come up with, is it's at Special Varmit.
Setup to run longer bullets... or rounds loaded with a long COL.
I need to check the twist rate, but I think it's a 9 1/4 or 9 1/2 twist.

Check it and see how much freebore it has. I sort of screwed up, in my opinion, when I bought my reamer for my 7-08. I had it set up to be able to run the 162s, but after I got it I decided that I was never going to shoot them in that rifle. Now I shoot 140s with a goodly amount of jump, but it's a hunting rifle with a #4 fluted barrel so under .5 MOA at 200 is plenty good out to 400 yards or so, just not what I'd have thought was the ideal setup.

I am a huge fan of my 308s. I shoot thousands of 308 rounds a yr at targets, but my opinion is that for most game east of the front range, and a lot of stuff on the other side, the 7-08 is about perfect. Lots and lots of bullets to choose from from 162s (not enough boiler to push much heavier) down to 100 grain varmint bullets. Less recoil, better BCs for given bullet weights, flatter shooting than a 308, and all in a short action (other than the OPs)

My bullet fo choice for a hunting bullet is either the 140SGK or the 140 Accubond (the normal ones, not the LR stuff) running close to 2900FPS. They make dead deer and shoot flat.

I do have a 7mmRM, it doesn't even have a scope on it.

OP...

As you look into this further, make sure of what you are getting. A 7mm-08 BDL varmint Special was a short action, had a heavy barrel from the factory, no sights They were common on the steel sillouette ranges of the late 70-80's. Fine rifles.

If it is a Long action, it is not a factory gun, unless it came from the custom shop as mentioned.

The BDL VS was a fine rifle.

I have a savage in 7-08 that I put back together from spare parts. The thing shoots phenominal , unfortunately it is a 1 in 11 twist , but the 120 class bullets are lazers out this gun. I am sorry I didn't try this cartridge sooner.

Doe st matter if it's a long action. I built one on a savage la. The 140 bergers in mine are great. I won't wast the 162s In it till they become more available. Just have it headspaced and make sure whoever put it together did it right. 7-08 is the easiest round I've ever loaded for to make shoot good
