Anybody who can chamber a barrel can make a nut. You dont see many do it because if they can make a nut they can fit a barrel and dont need it so see if your gunsmith can knock you one out right quick.
Savages generally taper all the way through the threads. The 788 tennon is 1.552 long, at least my rifle that i just measured to day is! The threaded portion on a savage is usually 1.500-1.600 long. That means the nut would start on the 788 where it ends on the Savage. Wouldnt be enough meat to torque it!I realize the point is moot since 1"-20 nuts are not available, But,,, a savage sporter small shank barrel rethreaded would work. At 1.555" from breech end, the barrel diameter is 1.040 -- larger than the 1" OD thread diameter needed for the 788.

I think your math is better than mine! I Did overlook the diameter difference. Its to late for coffee, Ive got no better excuse!I have a small shank Savage sporter barrel in front of me, a 22" .30-06. From the breech end, it is 2.4" before the diameter drops down to 1", more than enough room for a 1" ID barrel nut. The 788 factory barrel I have at hand has a 1.555 tenon, very similar to yours and this tenon already accounts for the factory recoil lug. Subtract this from 2.4 and you have .845" left of 1" or larger diameter barrel. A Savage small shank nut only has .532" of threads and the large shank has .400" and both hold a barrel securely to the receiver. I have several Savage takeoff sporters and they have the same contour. Perhaps you are overlooking the fact that the new thread to fit the 788 is 1"-20, not 1 1/16"-20 If my math is off somewhere, please advise.
