rem 788 threads

Why are the threads turned off of tenon of a factory 788 barrel???? This area is about 4 threads long----the receiver is fully threaded----so why are the barrel threads interrupted??? Just wonderin'

If the threads are turned off to allow for the front bedding screw, then the barrel must have been off at some point.
That would mean that the front bedding screw is too long.
This is a bad fix for a problem like this. Better to cut the bedding screw down a bit for clearance. A liitle dykum or blue will let you know if the screw is hitting the barrel.
A simple file will even work. I'm not and expert on this but I have run into this with rifles before. The stock shrinks a tad or the screw is tightend down to much and compress,s the stock.
A rifle with this condition would rock in the stock and
Mess up barrel vibration , causing poor accuracy.

I have two 788's and they both have the interrupted threads on the factory barrel shank.

That must have been an up grade . Mine had full treads.
It is a 222 on the long action, This is the first i have heard of this.

this barrel has factory rem. stamps--it appears to have never been off before; although it could have been from another rifle, however I doubt it because its contour matches a couple of others I looked at. I think it must have come from rem like this.?

I remember taking mine off> it was no easy task. they had some kind of thread locker on it. The threads were a bit battered from the front bedding screw. It sure didn't help any. Right now it has a shillen benchrest grade barrel on it and shoots """'''
