Rem 788 vs 700 barrel fitup

I am looking to rebarrel my beloved 788 in 222. Will a 700 barrel fit or can it be made to fit?

700 barrel won't fit, but can be made to fit. 700 has a shank length of approx. .875 and the 788 is 1.560". 700 threads are 1.062x16 TPI, while the 788 is 1.000x20 TPI. All dimensions are nominal. Cutting the shank down to 1.000 diameter will leave barely a trace of thread and should not interfere with rethreading to the 788 thread. The shank must be extended about another .850 to account for the extra length of the 788 shank and cutting off the standard 700 bolt counterbore. This will still leave a barrel shoulder diameter larger than the original 788 barrel has if using an original 700 barrel contour or larger. If your gunsmith is not familiar with the 788, it will be come apparent what needs to be done once he pulls the barrel.

If you can not do the work YOUSELF , I see no benefit in using a factory barrel .
