75gr for coyotes

So i normally hunt coyotes with a bolt action but latley i have been getting several doubles coming in and in the terrain im in its hard to get a shot on the 2nd one unless i have a buddy with me and sees the other one. I have an ar that i shoot the hornady 75gr bthp out of and was wondering if anyone has experience with this bullet? I really want 1 shot ethical kills on good placement shots. We all have had bad shot placement. I dont want to blow the side out of them eather. Let me know what your experience has been please before i try them out. Thanks.

I have using a 75 gr VMax in my 244 (slow twist 6 Rem) for 10 years with out standing performance on coyotes. I run them right at 3500 fps out of a 28" 1:12 twist Shilen barrel. Most shots have an exit wound that isn't pretty. I don't know if the hp would be the barrel from exiting or not. I am guessing no... Also not sure if you are a 22 cal or 243 cal 75 bthp. I think they make both. Of course I am referring to the 0.243.

This seems to be one of those run what you got years for reloading.

Luck, Tim

Shot a lot of coyotes from my 12tw 6-284 using 75gr Vmax. They are definitely NOT fur friendly.

Also shot a lot of coyotes with a 9tw 22-6mm running Berger 75gr VLD's. They've always killed ever coyote I ever shot with them but they don't always open up consistently. Sometimes they'd have pretty small entrance and a slightly larger exit and other times they'd leave big gaping holes.

It’d take only a modicum of reading comprehension to deduce you were loading for a semi-auto, given your desire for quicker follow ups & query on such a ‘mag friendly’ bullet as the 75BTHP. So, I understood ya the first time...
Sure, the 75BTHP is OK as a coyote bullet. But I’d sooner steer ya toward the gold ol’ Sierra 65gr Gameking. Easy to load @ 2.260” mag constraint, doesn’t take up too much capacity, and is an effective and reliable killer on coyotes. Because, that’s what I loaded when I ran a rig like yours, back in the day... use sierras recommend load straight from their manual... 25.2gr H335. TAC & Varget also work.
Zero @ 200yds, hold dead on from 0-225yds, and hang the horizontal x-hair post just above the guard hairs at ~300-ish. Quick & dirty ‘on the fly’ ballistics...good luck & have fun!

I like the speed vs bullet weight. 55's for me, Benchmark, 25g plus a tad with CCI 400's shoots some small groups in my AR. 55g Sierra bthp, 55g Sierra semi point, 55g Sierra spt just works. 55g Hornady sp is a very, very accurate bullet, and the cannalure does not seem to detract from accuracy with Small groups out of my bushmaster.

Sierra 55g BTHP is a very Mag friendly bullet, so is the 55g Sierra semi point.

I know there are many different bullets that would work but with supplies so abundant (just kidding) i dont want to try and hunt down new bullets and work up a load when i already have it dialed in for a round. I use 50gr vmax in one bolt action. 50gr nosler varmint tip in another and 35gr bergers in my 204. If its not a good choice ill just stick to the bolt actuons untill supplies are a little easier to find.

Several of us use ARs when shooting coyotes. Our usual choice for the bullet though is the VMAX or the Ballistic Tip. We aren't as concerned as you are with the condition of the hide. There is no worth for the effort nowadays and the ranchers appreciate our efforts.

I do use the Hornady 75 gr. BTHP for other ARs and for bolt rifles for practice and a few matches. Given the hollow point and the minimum width of the coyote carcass, I'm just not sure what the exit would look like.

Load a few and give it a try. Nothing like personal experience for improving the knowledge base.

If its not a good choice ill just stick to the bolt actuons untill supplies are a little easier to find.

There are several suppliers which are stocking the 100s, 500's and 4,000's. The largest bulk quantities are the best buy of course.

Enjoy!

Go to the Hornaday 68gr bthp. Just a suggestion. In September my buddy aired a coyote out at 250 yards with a 53vmax out of my .223 while we were on prairie dog trip.

Those 53gr Vmax are one of my favorite coyote bullets I shoot them out of my 9tw 223AI and 12tw 22-250.

Coyotes are not that tough, I've killed a few hundred now, heaviest bullet I ever used was 60gr Sierra. The 60gr Sierra out of a 223 just isn't going fast enough for reliable expansion. I tried many bullets over the years, once I settled on the 55gr vmax at 3050fps, I stopped looking. I save fur, for that they are the best I found for coyotes, but my fur buyer complained about the 22 cal entrance hole. Now all I use if saving fur is 17-223 with a 25gr. Even with a poor hit, a 55gr vmax will stop them long enough for a second shot.

I shot one last year with a factory Hornady 75 BTHP round in a Valkyrie at 75yds. It droped hard, nothing explosive, just a nickel size exit.

I would agree with those suggesting a lighter, faster bullet. I have found the 40 grain ballistic tip to be a very good coyote bullet. The ballistic tip is much better than the v-max for coyotes, given the heavier shank. They tend to fragment less and after more penetration. I also like the fact my Rock River Coyote rifle shoots them into .40" and they are going 3700 fps out of my 20" barrel with 28 grains of Benchmark.

I love the nosler ballistic tipped varment in 50gr but have not seen them in almost 2 years. I have some left just did not want to run them in an ar just yet untill i can find more.

For coyotes within 400 yards or so, I'd strongly suggest going with a Barnes 50 grain Varmint Grenade. They open up very quickly and expend all the energy in the coyote, only exiting on occasion if shot very close. Even way out there - they still open up which many bullets don't do very well. I have used from 32 grain all the way up to the 73's and 75's - I keep going back to the Barnes. If you don't have a brake, adding one will greatly help you see those seconds - as well as your shot impacts. The lighter 50's also reduce recoil rise noticeable.

Good to see you around

Go browse Toby Bradshaw's running thread "Not Wile Enough" to see how effective a Nosler 40 BT is on coyotes. Toby seems to be on hiatus, but the evidence remains.
