700 Remington??

Maybe I missed seeing it, but did you do a bore twist test to see what your bore has ?
The old cleaning rod twist procedure should tell you what you have. Takes about five minutes to do.

All my Remington 700's and 7's in 223 purchased from the mid 80's to late 90's had 12" twists.

This is easy to check for yourself. All you need is a cleaning rod and some tape.

As has been said, the barrel assembly date code would be
  • A=March
  • O=1977,1994, or 2020
  • T=1970 or 1999

The receiver serial number "E" prefix puts the date sometime between 2000 and 2008. However, there is some inconsistencies between the "D" and "E" dates between 2000 and 2008.

With the "E" serial number prefix being closer to the 2000 year and the "T" being 1999...my guess would be...

March 1999

Clear as mud for me.
Mine must be older than I thought.
I read somewhere that receivers can be older than rifle build date.
No letter on receiver SN and screw holes for peep sight.

I too use the cleaning rod.

They need a selector lever for 5.56 to .223 lol.

Exactly. It looks like the closer Remington got to being bought out in 2007, the crazier things get.

An example of unclear would be my 700 vs another 700. What came first, the chicken or the egg?

sn 659 vs 658

D659xxxx AZ=March 2005 vs G6583384 AO=July 2006

What happened to Serial Number prefix "E" ?

I was looking on gunbroker and noticed the following

OF 12 stamped on the barrel, and a B7636000 serial number.

Then I noticed on the box label, the packer's ID....40290F

your receiver is sometimes referred to as no prefix or pre letter, and generally more desirable, or at least I think so. Remington did take receivers and barrels from different production years and put them together. I think the barrel indicates when the the rifle was assembled. peep sight holes are a definite plus.

I added some serial numbers and date codes from some rifles here:

Sometimes the model variant can help narrow it down, if not by year at least by era. Serial prefix, barrel code, finish quality, and trigger type.

The matte finish of one era was far tougher than another era, as was the richness of the blue. The early synthetic stocks were a hair more robust in one era, than another. The early era compared to the Cerebus era has differences. Remington LE police models were better than the Remington police models. Cerakote came along in one era. The serial number engraving quality changed over time as well.

I'll make it as simple as I can based on my amateurish research...
  • Receiver "E" between 1995 and 2001
  • E654 puts it in line with early 1999 serial numbers
  • "O" makes it January
  • Looks like two separate inspector's barrel stamps, primary stamp for Jan 1994 and secondary stamp applied in Jan 1999. The inspector's full code would be on the box end label.
Conclusion: January, 1999

Other details could help decide which Package, Edition/Options...i.e. ADL, BDL, DM etc.
