7-6.5 prc Reamer question

Those of you who are running a no neck turn chamber that isn’t custom specked; are you running Manson or JGS?

I’ve both JGS & Manson’s reamer, both No Neck Turn, both .535 at the 200 line.
JGS free bore .220 & Manson .225
The basic difference between the two is that the JGS reamer that Alex Wheeler released to the public has a 1* degree lead and the Manson has a more standard 1.5
Alex’s reamer is specifically designed to suit the Berger 180 Hybrid.
I note a video by F Class John regarding him testing the 180’s verses Berger’s 184’s in his 7-6.5PRC and deciding that the 184’s were performing just a bit better.
He and Erik C are close friends and indeed have several videos together so I am assuming that he is using the Manson reamer {I did ask but never received an answer} which is built to Erik Cortina’s specification and with the 1.5 degree lead may be the reason that the 184’s were just a bit ahead of the 180’s.
Folks that I know using the JGS reamer have adheared to the use of the 180 hybrids as that is what it was designed specifically for.
I have also heard that the ADG 7-6.5PRCW brass can be used “As Is” without neck turning in a “Neck Turn” chamber where as necked up Lapua 6.5PRC brass does need to be neck turned.

Thank you.

Any suggestions on how you spec a reamer for top accuracy.
Do you start with measuring the brass you want to use and build your reamer off that.
What do you suggest on the throat area?

Thanks for any info.

Alex’s JGS reamer has a .2200” free bore…
Mason’s version that Erik C designed has a .2250” free bore.

Its not that critical. I normally will go with Saami min spec bodies. Unless theres something weird like the prc case which was unusually tight compared to other magnum chambers. I dont like anything tight in a chamber. The main thing is the throat diameter. Length doesnt matter. Plus or minus .010 on length is irrelevant. Diameter is critical. If you go .001" over nominal on the diameter you will always be good. I have worked with JGS reamers for about 10 years and know how the tolerances work with their reamers. I know what Im getting when I spec out a JGS reamer with those numbers. A lot of people will take my specs to another company, maybe they are cheaper or faster I dont know but your not getting the same reamer. If you want my reamer you have to get it from JGS. And no they do not give me a penny. In hindsight I should have made a deal LOL. And stick to the 1.5 lead angle. I have reamers from .75 to 3 degrees. The first time I tried a 1 degree it was on a BRA and I had Tom Mousel shooting it in BR. This was before the 6.5 prc existed and before the 284 wheeler. It was probably 2018. It would shoot some of the best tuning targets you ever saw. Record breaking level stuff. But in the match it would fall apart. 2 years Tom struggled and we really didnt know why. I finally said we need to get off this 1 degree and he went right back to shooting well again. Now that 1 degree did break an agg record but the throat was "freshened" every match. So there is some real negatives with a 1 degree if the bullet doesnt like that angle. Those were vapor trail 103s. We have not tried the Roy Hunter 103 which we now make in a 1 degree yet. It may work better I dont know. But the 1.5 has no weirdness about it and it shoots. One of the reasons I didnt want to release the print on this thing was I knew guys would apply this 1 degree thing to everything and in most cases will end up struggling. The only reamers I use that have 1 degree throats are on the 284 and 7-6.5 prc. And if you have one with a 1.5 and its shooting, just leave it alone. That goes for any reamer. There are hummer reamers, and you have to recognize them and you baby them and dont mess with a good thing. You take a top competitors reamer away and they are in trouble.

Just this week my gunsmith almost turned away chambering several barrels. The customer provided a manson reamer from Sherman Wildcat. This gunsmith has chambered some winning LR benchrest guns and countless others… very maticulous.. takes his time. He said they just dont cut like the JGS.. something about the last 20 thou.. he said its very hard to get the speed where JGS is very consistent.. reamer to reamer. I dont know anything about this stuff.. I just shoot but his comments stuck with me. Go with what Alex says 100%.

I bought the Wheeler design JGS 7-6.5 PWCW, ADG Brass .. I shoot 180 Hybrids and in 8 months I shoot HM scores at 1000.. soon I will string enough matches together to earn HM. I worried like crazy about clickers and just havent had any 800 pieces of brass @ 7-8 firings.

I dont want to make comments without correcting if something changes. We picked up the barrels that were chambered with the Manson. Our gunsmith said the Manson was really smooth and the chambering went really well… he was surprised based on past experience.

Manson and JGS are, from my limited experience, the almost universal choice for the gunsmiths that I have dealt with.
