7-08AI vs 6.5x47L

I've been wondering about the performance of these two carts compared to each other. Capacity seems close, performance should be about equal with say 130 in the 6.5 and 140 in the 7, but has anyone put these two up against each other to determine if there is an obvious edge to one of the other?

I know Lapua brass for the 6.5 being small primer is ideal, but 7AI brass can be made from Lapua Palma brass as well. Cost advantage to the 7 with inexpensive domestic brass.

I really want a 6.5x47, but got to thinking and am curious about it now...

we use a 6.5x47L for mid-range F-class and 7-08 REM for long-range. The 6.5 is amazingly accurate and hard to beat 600 yards and in. the 7-08 has more recoil, better wind drift at 1,000 and is also amazingly accurate. run the 6.5 with 140 hybrids at 2800 and the 7 with 180 hybrids at 2700 fps

I think you should forget about the "cost advantage" of domestic brass--it won't hold up. Winchester is decent but isn't to be found. My own experience with Remington was not very good--primer pockets got loose quick even with mild to medium loads. Get the Lapua brass whichever you choose would be my $.02

Cost saving to me seam to be of little importance. The 47L case seams to last between 25 and 35 reloads. How many does a 7-08 last? Not that many. So will cost be less, it might be, may be not.

Accuracy wont be there though. The 47 is very hard to beet.

How often will you shoot 1000? I just went in big for the 6.5 because 1000 is rare for me.

1000 will not be often, but I do shoot to 850 quite a bit. I have some Win 7-08 brass just sitting around...

I wouldn't expect the 7-08AI to be able to really push 180s that hard, but if you can get them to 2700 that's pretty impressive!

That's funny! I bought a 40 SW pistol because I had "brass sitting around".
GEEZ!!!, I hope you aren't feeling guilty about your purchase. Personally, in have never needed ANY excuse or reason for another gun, if i was so inclined.

Do you shoot a 7-08AI or a straight 7-08?

I did literally the exact same thing, bought a 40 to go with the brass, lol! My mom doesn't shoot her Hi-Power anymore so I decided to take the brass.

Curious, why won't the 7-08AI be as accurate at the 6.5x47? I can see straight 7-08 losing to it, but AI should help with efficiency and adding in the extra horsepower to drive the high BC 284 pills faster.

Look at some of the new Hornady bullets coming out real quick. They have a 147 in a 6.5 with a BC of .697. That puts the 6.5 a head of the 7-08 in all categories. Hell, that puts the 6.5 ahead of 90% of all the long range guys at the 1000 yard line. The 6.5-284 will be on top if the bullet is accurate.

Guilty? Not i

Guilty? Not in the least! Barretta Storm. Wanted to try one. Great little gun! Very accurate.

I've got a 6.5 barrel on order right now because of Hornady's new offerings. I've teetered on the fence for a 260 for awhile now. These new projectiles tipped me over.

I shot my 6.5x47 LR prone rifle at 1000 in the any rifle matches at the 2010 Berger LR SW Nationals. No idea where I finished overall, but running Berger 130 Hunting VLDs at 2930fps with RL17 shot very well for me. Granted, the throat of that bbl looks a bit toasty after fewer than 1500rds, but man, did it hammer at both 600 & 1000. I'd re-barrel & go at it again with the 6.5x47 before I'd spend the time, $$$, & effort to build a separate rifle in 7mm-08, whether going with the std or AI version - I'd step up to a straight 284 instead if I thought I had to have a 7mm rifle. But, I'm still shooting prone with a sling, not F-class.

The 47 is accurate but no more so than the 08 once it's developed for accuracy. The 260, 6.5 creedmore or 6.5-284 are also top of there class in accuracy. Less recoil in the 6.5-47 for sure than the 7-08. The
