6XC for Prairie Dogs and Groundhogs

I think it's very possible that some of the reasons that people are having trouble getting 87 VMAXs to shoot is that they're already into the donut because they're shooting much too short of a freebore.

I'm starting to believe that a lot of people are experiencing issues with the donut and they don't even know it. They will get a new barrel and think that a short freebore will gain them some advantage. Then after the 4th or 5th reload the things start shooting crazy and they think they need a new barrel.
Good point, and equally good illustration. When I spec'd out my .22 Creedmoor reamer I sat down with about 6 different bullets, from the 55 gr. V-max, to the 80.5 gr. Berger Full Bore. There is surprisingly little difference in where the base of all those bullets seat in relation to the neck/shoulder junction. I made the longest of those set 1/4 up the neck and the shortest (not the 55 V-max by the way) not more than 1/3 up the neck. It has a .110 freebore, and has proven to be about the perfect length for all those bullets.

I bet a 65 gn V-Max would be a laser beam out to 3-350 yards : )
Yes, That was my thinking, also !
I will be trying those and, the 75 gr. V-Maxes, in my 1-7.5 Twist 6 XC to see, which is most accurate.
I will probably have to, reduce the Velocity "some" to get good Group's with, either bullet.
The 80 grain, F B Berger Varmints, shoot very "well" ( easily, Sub 1/2 MOA ) but, NOT "Explosive" enough, on Sage Rats / R chucks.
I'd like to, reduce Muzzle "Flip" from recoil, on my 10 Pound, Braked, 6 XC to see, the Hits better !
Has anybody tested these, 65's (or, 75 gr. V-Maxes ) in, a 7.5 or, 8 Twist, Rifle ??
70 gr. Sierra, Blitz Kings,.. MIGHT Be another, good candidate ??
WANT,.. Low, recoil to, reduce Muzzle Jump with, good accuracy out to, 350- 400 yds for, Windy Days !
And,.. I NEED more,.. "Splody"

Great ballistics but a whole bunch of muzzle flip.
That's why my 6XC is plenty heavy! Very easy to spot my misses!

Man don't make a typo on this forum.
You and I realize the post had typos. But not everyone who reads posts is experienced enough to understand and may try to duplicate that velocity. It happens. I’m in the automotive repair business and there’s no end to the damage people do to their vehicle because they read about it on some forum.

I have yet to find anything that the 6XC doesn't excel at. When I built my first XC the 110gr Sierra had just came out and that's what I built around. I am using Peterson small pocket brass and 40.0gr of R16 was getting me 3040fps with .3 Moa results on paper. I drew a December Coues tag that same year and I was ready to deal death with my new rifle. I shot a really nice Coues buck that year at 760 yards. the impact sound that bullet made and the absolute damage that bullet did to that deer will be unforgettable. While out Javelina hunting later that year there was a very unlucky Jack rabbit on a hill 260 yards away. I shot that rabbit with the same bullet and it was absolute carnage. At that point I decided I was going to leave that bullet for paper and varmints. I have since switched to the 105 Berger hybrid which works fantastic on deer sized game. The Sierra 110 I think would make an excellent prairie dog or ground hog bullet. Great BC and plenty of pop.
