Good point, and equally good illustration. When I spec'd out my .22 Creedmoor reamer I sat down with about 6 different bullets, from the 55 gr. V-max, to the 80.5 gr. Berger Full Bore. There is surprisingly little difference in where the base of all those bullets seat in relation to the neck/shoulder junction. I made the longest of those set 1/4 up the neck and the shortest (not the 55 V-max by the way) not more than 1/3 up the neck. It has a .110 freebore, and has proven to be about the perfect length for all those bullets.I think it's very possible that some of the reasons that people are having trouble getting 87 VMAXs to shoot is that they're already into the donut because they're shooting much too short of a freebore.
I'm starting to believe that a lot of people are experiencing issues with the donut and they don't even know it. They will get a new barrel and think that a short freebore will gain them some advantage. Then after the 4th or 5th reload the things start shooting crazy and they think they need a new barrel.
