6XC for Prairie Dogs and Groundhogs

I am looking for help with a Rem 700 semi-custom project. One option is to rebarrel to a 6XC for PD hunt in the Spring. I have not started the project and looking for input. I am sure the 6BR will work and I have a little bit of info gathered so far. I already have a .223 set up.

I want to know from someone using the 6XC round:

1- What kind of velocities and accuracy are you getting with the Nosler/Hornady/Sierra varmint bullets?,If there is an easy computer program to help with the velocity part, let me know.)

2- What kind of case life are you getting with the Tubb brass, primer pockets, case stretching, etc.)?

Thanks in advance for the input - Tony

Can't tell you yet how the 6XC will do on p/dogs yet. But my Pac Nor is on its way and I'm sure it will do just fine. Had Pac Nor cut a short throat in mine for use with 87-90 gr varmint bullets. This leaving the option open for still using 107-115 gr bullets for the extreme range p/dogs. Hope to have it put together and 'running' in February or so. Look out p/dogs in June !!

Been shooting the 6XC in competition for 7-8 years, using Tubb bullets and brass. I clean and anneal brass after every firing, and shoot the same 200 pieces for the life of the barrel(around 2,000). I'm on 3rd barrel. Probably get 10-12 firings. The most common reason for retiring a piece of brass is due to loose primer pockets, occasionally a split neck, or break at the pressure ring. I would expect fewer loose pockets if using the small primer brass. But I don't believe this happens in more than 20 pieces out of the 200. Used H4350, 40.2 gr. MV around 2950? Rifle shoots in the 2s n 3s. Made steel-plate shots at 1200 and 1300. Figured on taking that rifle to Nebraska on a coyote hunt, but wouldn't want to carry it too far!.

6xc is awesome on pdogs. I have a bunch of 6xc 50 fb large varmint Rem 700 prefits on the shelf ready to ship.

I use 85 Sierra Hp. I've shot 70 TNT's and Berger 80s and 88s.

I've heard 75 VMAX is a great option.

Tubb ALWAYS has Peterson brass in stock. ALWAYS!!! Large and small rifle.

What's not to like?

I would get one of Urbans 6xc barrels if I wanted to make a PD blaster.
I wish all of my 6mms were 6xcs due to what he said above

Great thing about 6xc is that it works flawlessly in a repeater.

I personally have gone to 160 fb for everything. I'm even having a 160 fb made in 6bra.

Check out this thread and look at the Freebore studies.

Most of these 6mm varmint bullets go down into the neck further than you think. I only want the bullet pressure ring just past halfway down the neck to 2/3 down the neck at touch. Most varmint bullets go in even further than that because they jump.

I think it's very possible that some of the reasons that people are having trouble getting 87 VMAXs to shoot is that they're already into the donut because they're shooting much too short of a freebore.

I'm starting to believe that a lot of people are experiencing issues with the donut and they don't even know it. They will get a new barrel and think that a short freebore will gain them some advantage. Then after the 4th or 5th reload the things start shooting crazy and they think they need a new barrel.

I bet a 65 gn V-Max would be a laser beam out to 3-350 yards : )

All of those light bullets from 70 down seem to perform very well out to about 300 yards. Or pretty well at least. Then the performance of those bullets just falls off completely because the bullets are slowing down so fast.

That's why it would be a huge advantage to go to the 22 XC and shoot the 75 ELDM because the bullets ballistic coefficient is so much higher it slows down so much slower. That bullet is outstanding out to 600 plus. And blows up very well and is super cheap.

Here is another thread I would like to include.
