6x47 Lapua or 6BR

Which one of these cartridges would be better for varmint hunting out to 600 yards using 80 to 105grn bullets. What is the opinion about the 6x47 Lapua? is it that good. I would like to hear from those who have used the 6x47 Lapua. I know the 6BR is awesome cartridge, how does the 6X47 Lapua compare to the 6BR. Is the 6x47 Lapua worth choosing over the 6BR?

Reeper, I have the 6 X 47 and it is awesome. I will have a 6BR before too long I hope. My 6 X 47 has given me a best group of .991 at 500 yds. and bugholes at 100 yds. when I do my part.
From my experience with the 6 X 47 and from what I have read about the 6BR I think either one will do the job just fine but the 6 X 47 is a little faster with the added powder. Just my opinion. Bill

This sounds Nutz but there's a guy on BRcentral claiming 4000fps with 70 grainers with good brass life...How does that statement rub you?

If your not going passed 600yds and you don't have a need to shoot 115gr bullets, why leave 6BR? 115 grain bullets are really to big for 6BR, but, the 105-108's do nicely out to 600 and more. The barrel life will be much better with a 6BR.

I'm considering going 6X47 L to shoot 115gr-117gr bullets on a 1000yd gun.

I would do a 14 tw 6BR. It will run 70gr 3600 to 3700f/s. That will kill any Varmint out to 600yds. If you want more than that do a 6MM AI 10 tw and shoot 87 Vmax. that wil get you to 1000yds.

I was just wondering how the 6x47L performs with 80 to 107grn bullets. Is the 6x47L just as good as the 6BR or is it better for overall varminting with the heavier bullets. I would like to use 105grn A-Max bullets for varminting. The 105grn A-Max gives the best of both worlds which is High BC with expanding qualities of a V-Max type bullet.

Just my opinion but haveing both i feel that the 6x47 picks up where the 6br leaves off. Both have excelent brass and will handel bullets in the 107 range but the added punch the lapua gives is worth it.

Here is another question. What about a no-turn neck chamber with the 6x47Lapua, is the brass good enough. I am sick of turning necks and really want a cartridge that does not require neck turning.

I know the 6BR Brass is excellent and a no-turn neck chamber is super accurate. When you neck down the 6x47 Lapua brass to 6mm, does it require neck turning. I have heard, all you have to do is neck down the 6.5x47 Lapua brass to 6mm, then load and shoot. What is the opinion regarding this matter.

Like I said, I am sick of turning necks and a 6BR no turn neck is very tempting. But if the 6x47 Lapua is similar, then it will be a no brainier to go with the 6x47 Lapua. Also, pushing a 105grn A-Max at 3200fps sure sounds like an awesome long range, explosive, varmint cartridge.

Reeper, there are reamers and dies available to accomplish your goal. Redding, and Wilson both make dies and I'm sure Kiff has a reamer. About all you would need as far as neck diameter is concerned would be around .272 or so. No more turning brass. Bill

Bill, thanks for the info. The smith told me I should go with a .100 lead and that would allow me to shoot 80 to 107grn bullets. My goal would be to shoot either the 87grn V-Max or 105grn A-Max.

I have both 6BR's and a 6X47 Lapua,in fact someone just wrote about in AccurateShooter.com ...it was a surprise to me!)

I personally think the 6BR has everything you would want in a varmint gun, especially if you are opposed to mucking with brass. My experience with 6.5X47 brass is that it is so uneven, it HAS to be turned. The overbore index of the 6X47 is much higher than a 6BR, so you can get twice the life from a 6BR barrel and still load it hot.

I've won matches with both and I've hunted varmints with both. For perdictability and simplicity, I vote 6BR

Obunded,

Thanks for the vote on the 6BR. This is going to be a hard choice, however, so far the conversation seems to be leaning toward the 6x47. I would like to hear more opinions from everyone on this matter.

You will get more velocity outta the 6x47 lapua. Which is a major advantage in a choosing a cartridge for a varmint rifle. Unless your gonna shoot hundreds of rounds in dog towns, then the 6mmbr would proly be a better choice. Simply because of barrel life issues.

I know 6BR barrel life is awesome, but I have read the 6x47 Lapua has pretty good barrel life too. I guess which ever one I choose, it sounds like I am going to like it. As of right now, I am leaning toward the 6x47 Lapua in a Match Chamber no-turn neck configuration with a .100 lead. I am hoping to hear some more information from you all before I make my final decision.

Reeper,
I was making the same decission in December that you are making now. I have a 22-250 thats awsome out to 350-400,I have killed chucks at 500) But looses a lot of steam at those ranges. I had a 6AI couple of years ago and it was a shooter but burned up 1/2 of it's 1500 round barrel life fire forming brass. I sold that gun but really missed it's reach out and touch em ability.

So after lots of listening to other shooters and several gun smiths, I opted for the 6x47L. Reasons being:

1) No fireforming brass, just run the thru a Forester 6x47L FL Sizer. I opted for a tight neck .269 so I have to turn the necks but I do that anyway, I believe it yeilds better accuracy,I know some will disagree but thats been my observation) but you don't have to turn the necks, thats a decission you will make for either cartridge.

2) The 6x47L has many of the same atributes of the 6br that make it a tremendously accurate cartridge, Small rifle primer,Grat Brass availability, overall cartrige shape.

3) The 6x47L is not tremendously overbore like the 6AI, it is very efficient at delivering velocity for the powder burned.

But the only test that really matters is if the caliber shoots like a 6br. I just started shooting my 6x47 L but am very impressed with velocity and accuracy.Easily getting 3600fps with a 70 grain bullets and trying Berger, Bart and Sierra Blitzkings and trying Varget and N550 shot groups in the .2's and .3's Best being .187 and worst being .435".

I believe the rifle is responsible for much of that acuracy but the cartridge is definately a factor as well.

Bottom line My gun shoots as good as if it were chambered for 6br and I get a few hundred feet/sec velocity plus I belive the barrel life will be camparible as well.

Ultimately either cart will do a great job but all things being equal I would choose the 6x47 L

Stoch,

Thanks for the excellent info. I will go with a no-turn neck. I have had enough of turning necks, however, I do agree with you, I too think neck turning does help accuracy. I hope I get some more info on this site. Like I said, I will be using 80 Thru 107grn bullets, so the 6x47 Lapua may be the way o go.

I am also trying to decide within these same type of cartridges. Please post again with your level of satisfaction after you decide. I would like to here more testimony on these, particularly with barrel life.
