6X250

A good friend pulled a 6x250 barrel down after about 500 rounds. He has decided to stick with bigger caliber. (6.5 284 or 308). Too much wind drift for him with 6mm stuff. I have a chance to get this barrel, dies and brass for what I think is reasonable. the shank is good to go with a Rem SA which is what I will be using. I don't get into competition but I would suspect that this round might be really great for varminting(g hogs). How would you value this. He is asking 300.

You will need to check that headspace is gtg. Not a great bargain, but you are saving a few bucks over a new barrel and chambering, but if it needs addl gunsmithing, think about it real hard.

What is the barrel length, contour, make, twist rate, throat length?

6/250 is a really good cartridge with the right loads.

I think it is a Hart St Stl and originally set up for an Fclass heavy barrel contour. It is a really good barrell and shoots accruately but he was disappointed with the difficulty with wind drift of 6 vs heavier stuff. the twist rate is a question mark but he was shooting 105 Gr bullets.

Totally agree with areaone and Keith. The 6-250 can be a VERY formidable varmint and predator cartidge. And have seen a few in competition that were pretty tough to beat too.

All that being said, if there is a lot of gunsmithing that will be needed to make it fit your action & stock, you could well end up with the price of a new barrel and chambering and have a barrel with too much twist rate for what you want and 500(?) rounds through it.

My advice is to contact the gunsmith of your choice, explain to him what you want and have him give you a quote on what it will cost then make your decision based off his input. Just my 2 cents. WD

I am curious about the 6x250, is there a cartridge section on it somewhere?

Is it available in an Ackley version?

You might try here http://www.reloadbench.com/cartridges/w6mm250.html for information on one of the versions. I myself am shooting the .250 Savage case necked down to 6mm with no other changes. Just firing the cartridges to fire form the case to fit the chamber so no results are available yet. As far as an Ackley version, well what cartridge hasn't been developed!

I believe it is the same as the 6mm International or possibly the 6mm Donaldson(old ,old design), depending on shoulder angle or neck length. Popular 20 or 30 years ago in benchrest. i still think it would be a good cartridge if not overshadowed by the new and super popular cartridges today. Lite bullets would be great for varmints, cheaper brass than the 6br, just too bad there are so many 6mm rounds out there, but surely nothing wrong with the round.

I believe the 6xc, David Tubbs round, is fundamentally a 6x250 Imp.

I would have to see the groups it shot for $300, and he would need have to have good dies and alot of brass. I`m sure you realize you can run another reamer in that barrel. I have 2 6-284`s that started life as 6 PPC. I just picked up a reamer for 6mm-300WSM. I`m now looking for a 6mm barrel with an 8 twist that is 30 plus in. long.
