6SLR questions

243/6SLR/6XC

Capacity is on the side of the 6SLR if you are looking for velocity

Unless you are shooting BR I think the 6SLR will exceed your capabilities in actual use. As for BR, those guys are pretty dedicated to their "BR" chamberings. Not sure the extra capacity is useful in that sport.

After reading these post I'm might try to stretch my barrel for this season. It's got about 1250 on it and I expect to put about that many on it this season. I've used a load of 43.5-43.8gr of H4831 some H1000 and Rl26. I just got my new barrel last week. I hate life's tuff choices.

I ordered an SLR reamer at the SHOT show. The standard reamer has a .275" neck from JGS near as I can tell. I ordered the short FB but not the gas gun FB. My first rifle with it will be a 22-250 that I am having rebored to 243. We will see how it goes.

What would be your preference given your experience between 6xc and slr. Also have you shot a 6x47Lapua?

My choice would still be the SLR. I love the 6XC and have not shot the 6x47 however my son in law does have one and likes it. I shy away from it for the same reason that I went from the 6XC to the SLR. With the XC and the 6x47 you have to use the faster burning powders to get the velocity. With the 243 size case you have enough case capacity to use the slower powders and still push the 105 to 115s 3000+fps.

Now I know I will get guys saying I can push the 105s to 3100+fps with my 6x47 or XC but the barrel will be toast in a short period of time and brass will not last long. My "Personal" feeling is that your maxing out your case when your pushing the heavier bullets to 3000fps. With the 243 size case you don't need to push you loads to the max. plus you can do it with a slower powder which burns cooler and you will get more barrel life. Just my opinion on it anyway. The other thing I like about the SLR is, it is easy to form the cases. When you fire it for the first time it shoots as well and as fast as the formed case. So you don't waste barrel life trying to make cases. Accuracy wise I would say it is a toss up... Hope this helps but remember it's just "My" opinion.

I run N160 exclusively in my 6SLRs. H4350 is an exceptional powder as everyone knows, but it is very hard on throats compared to N160. I have 1,468 rounds on a prone gun, 30" barrel, .236 bore, that I run at 3,250fps with moly. I've never had any pressure issues with it. It would shoot 5"-6" of elevation at 1k. Borescoping it shows minimal checking at the lead with almost none forward of that. It looks comparable to a 6.5x284 with 300-400 rounds. I have a good friend whose 6SLR went south at around 2,700 rounds. His throat was much shorter than mine and he was running just under 3,100fps, but was very accurate. He won the LR Regional at ORSA last year with it. I have another one up and running for PRS type matches. 26", .237 bore, 7.5 twist that is currently running 44.7gr N160 at 3,115fps with moly in cold weather testing (40*). It has only 60 rounds or so. It is an great cartridge in every aspect. Very easy to form, easy to load, great accuracy potential, low recoil, great barrel life with the right powders. I don't chase barrel life, but as a byproduct, I will take it.

Matt,
What bullets are you running?
Thanks,

I have chambered a XP 100 in 6 slr for upcoming match in Wyoming . I have read how this can be hard to get good load for this but it seems to be easier than I figured . The XP only has 15 inch barrel but I am going with 107 SMK and try some 4831 and what would be recommended primer ? It is still cold here so it will be a while before I get to shoot , Thanks

Its pretty common that 43.5 grains of H4831 seems to work very well for everyone. I've seen it said if it doesn't work, take a look at your setup. I used Fed match primers when i was using 4831. Cant speak to the short barrel variable????

An update.... I had stepped away from my SLRs on and off for a couple of years to play with 6FatRat (ar) and 6BRX. This summer, I started working with a suppressor and my Ruger rpr 6SLR.....wow....how fun.... more accurate than ever. I found that that barrel liked a little weight on the end of it. Now, I'm playing with a tuner and it's starting to rival my BRX for accuracy.....love it!

PS..same suppressor on my BRX loosened it up... no brainer .... leave it alone...
