6PPC for varmints.

I had a 6ppc with a 2 oz. trigger and touched it off by accident in a hayfield. My only dumb mistake after many years of hunting. Have no idea where the bullet went. I stayed by my car for an hour to see if anyone was looking for the shooter. It was well over 1000 yards across crop fields to the nearest road. Make sure the rifle has at least 2 pounds trigger pull.
Don't put a round in the chamber until you are ready to shoot. Kudos for sticking around. If the rifle was set up pointing say 200 or 300 yes out, it never made it across the field. It's out there in the dirt. I don't own any guns except an AR with a 2# trigger pull.
