22PPC/6PPC and varmints

I am looking at an old BR gun with three barrels in 22PPC and 6PPC. I was wondering if anyone here has experience with these as a varmint cartridge...particularly woodchucks and PD's. Is forming brass a barrier to this endeavor? I think one of the 22 barrels is likely a fireform barrel. It appears all barrels are tight neck...but hey are not marked and I will need to get exact measurements. One is a Sinclair barrel, the other two are likely Hart.

Thoughts?

Either one will waste a woodchuck easily. If you don't want to form brass, norma makes both .

Velocity won't be a problem however being BR barrels they are most likely slow twists. If true this will limit your bullet selection to "light for caliber" Flat Base bullets with a low BC. This will restrict your ranges and increase wind drift although I would expect accuracy to be outstanding. Good luck and go kill a bunch! ;)

Power wise, the will be between a 222 Magnum and a 22-250. They will easily take woodchucks at 400+ yds with poly tipped bullets, "if you do your part" :) :) :)

The barrels should be 14" twists, so your best bet, bullet wise, is the 50gr Plastic tipped varmint bullets like the 50 gr BlitzKing and 50gr V-Max.

You will not be able to shoot the 55gr poly tipped bullets, they are too long.

Regular hollow pointns will work, but because of their low BC, your range will be cut a bit.

Well, I tell ya, Snert -- if that thing isn't an aluminum action, I suggest the best thing you can do is sell the whole kit and kaboodle to me and buy a decent varmint rig. Other than that, at normal ranges out to 300 or so the gun should do well on 'chucks. I think a benchrest stock is cludgy and unwieldy to handle when not on a bench, though.

Reed,
The action is a Superior. It is certainly all steel. My hang-up is spending time turning necks and fluffing around forming cases. I am ok with the "short range" and the slow twist is not a problem for me. If I do not take it, I expect the current owner to keep it...he isn't terribly hot to dump it.

thanks for the replies

+1 And you're correct that the tight chamber neck will require a bit more initial work on neck turning brass. However, if you're hunting for groundhogs you'll be shooting much less frequently than if you were hunting prairie dogs. Therefore, you shouldn't have as much brass to prepare and what you do make should last a loooong time.

You can buy prepped brass from any number of people. P1 Zombie Killer on here does a good job.

Another idea is to have a smith open up the necks till they are no turn for the Norma brass.

Snert, just put an ad on here for whatever neck turn diameter and someone will invariably sell you some fired brass they wont use in competition so you can lots of life out of it for varmints. The gun sounds like a good bargain to me.

I have shot a lot of 22 and 6 ppc on varmints of all kinds.

In the 22 PPC you can expect the 50 with extreme velocity at 3550-3650

In the 6 PPC, I would opt for the 55g Nosler, 55g Blitz King, and the 60g Sierra.
