6x47L for Varmints & Predators

I shoot totally custom 6PPC rifles in NBRSA 100/200/300 matches,i.e. BAT, Krieger, Jewel, etc). I'm looking to build a custom 6mm rifle for varmints and predators. The 6x47L has got my attention and sounds like it might be a very good varmint/predator rifle. I currently shoot 65-68 grain custom boattail bullets in my 6PPC's. I would like to shoot the exact same pills in a custom varmint/preadtor rifle. I had considered simply building another 6PPC for hunting; however, I want a little more velocity - thus the 6x47L. Also, I am addicted to Lapua brass via my 6PPC and could easily neck-down the Lapua 6.5x47.

Any thoughts, comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm waiting for my Lawton 7500 action and barrel to show up for my newest varmint project and it will be for the 6x47 Lapua.
It just seems to be a good idea for a varmint rifle with a little more push than my 6brs will allow with the heavy bullets for those far away critters......

I know the 65-68 grain custom BT's I want to shoot are slightly lighter than the norm for this cartridge; however, I think they are the perfect size for varmints and predators - plus they will get down range a little faster.

My gunsmith shot a .149 NBRSA world record,5-shot group) at 300 yards with this weight of bullet. I figure that should be accurate enough for putting one in the ear of a coyote.

Please keep the comments and experiences comming.

Thanks.

Well if it don't kill it, it sure won't hear the other one coming......

THE 6X47 HAS GOT TO BE EVEN BETTER FOR VARMINTS THOUGH IT WOULD HAVE TO BE LOADED DOWN FOR PREDITORS IF YOU WANT TH HAVE ANYTHING TO SELL TO A FUR BUYER.......I AM IN THE PROCESS OF WRITING A ARTICLE ON 10 TWIST 6BR AND HAVE BEEN HAMMERING MULE DEER AND ANTELOPE AT 374 TO 462 YARDS AND HAVE SEEN EVERYTHING FALL IN ITS
TRACKS SO ANOTHER 15% CASE CAPACITY WILL JUST STRETCH RANGES......
THE DECISION IS A 55 TO 70 GR. BARREL, 70 TO 90 OR 85 TO 105 OR SO BARREL.........I HAVE 2 6BR'S AND ONE IS 13.5 ANOTHER IS 10 AND
I REALLY LIKE MY 13.5 WITH 65GR V-MAX ON P DOGS, LOTS OF WAMMIE!!!
AND JUST DONT NEED MORE FOR DOGS THEN THIS BUT I SHOOT NOSLER
ZIPPEDO'S OUT OF THE 10 TWIST AS I ENDED UP WITH AROUND 5000 AND HAVE SHOT BURGER 95'S AND TEN TWIST IS GREAT FOR THIN SKINNED
BIG GAME SO THE DECISION IS WHAT APPLICATION AND WITH LAPUA BRASS
LASTING SO LONG LONG TERM SHOOTING SHOULD BE THE RULE NOT THE EXCEPTION BUT DONT!!!!!!! MAKE A 240 WEATHERBY OUT OF A 6X47 AS
MOST PEOPLE SEEM TO BE TRYING TO DO......SHOOT THE LOW SIDE NODE AND OVERLEATING,THROAT EROSION,WASTED POWDER AND EXCESSIVE RECOIL WILL NOT BE ISSUES.............

Big game is really not part of my plan with this gun - strictly varmints and predators. With the 68g custom BT I plan on using, a 13.5 twist Krieger would likely be my barrel. In my competative benchrest shooting, I typically like to shoot the low node for the very reasons you've stated. In paper punching contests, I don't care if the bullets walk to the target as long as they all go in the same hole. I only go to the high node when conditions mandate. For hunting, I would likely split the difference and find a tune in the middle that still was moving down range with some horse power; however, I want to maximize barrel life.

Keep the comments comming.

Thanks.

I just had a 6X47L built and I can't say enough good about it. Shoots in the,2's at 275yds with an 88gr Berger at 3400 FPS.

See other posts. I shot 9 G-Hogs between 100-300yds and it killed them instantly!
