6PPC for varmints.

I have a real nice 6PPC rifle, but I don't, and have never shot any sort of registered competition. I do though however like to hunt woodchucks here in Western Pennsylvania. I just posted a thread on this website looking for a custom made varmint rifle with a custom action. Now I am thinking why not just take this 6PPC, and put it on something more like a hunting stock. Most of my ranges will be less than 250 yards, and I have shot a few chucks with it and its been devastating on them. Most times the bullet which is a 66 grain hollowpoint does not even exit the animal. Sometimes can't even see an entrance hole.
So basically two questions...How do you feel about the 6PPC as a vermint round, and would it be practical to just send the rifle to someone and have them fit a stock to it.
Thanks!!

I have one that I'm thinking I'm going to do the same thing. I think there's a few things that drive people away. Brass prep/forming to PPC - but sounds like you have that covered. Shooting chucks I'm PA answers the other question - not super high volume shooting where you have to worry about barrel heating up. Last is some of the custom action PPC's get glued in so swapping stocks becomes a different proposition. But if you are leaving it as a varmint gun, you're gtg

PPC is a dandy sub 300 varmint gun. Depending on how traditional you want to be, go 22-24” barrel with a suppressor and you’ll be popping head shots all day long

It’s native bullet sizes are right in the wheelhouse for woodchucks. 58 gr vmax, 68 Bergers, the column bullets, they will all shoot tiny groups.

Throw them down the tube with benchmark, LT-32, V133, etc and have the time of your life

6ppc is a great varmint round.i have built quite a few for fox shooter's over here in the UK.have a hunting stock fitted and screw cut for a suppressor.not much will beat it at the distance you want to shoot.

I shot untold thousands of p, dogs, jack rabbits, ground squirrels with retired Benchrest rifles. The 6 PPC is an excellent varmint cartridge that leads to very, very long barrel life.

55g Noslers, 58g V max, 60g Sierra, 65g V max all shoot tiny groups in the low 2's, but a rifle will like what it likes. I shot many thousands of the Sierra 60g Hp with incredible accuracy.

65g V max was a shocker, low to mid 2's was the norm. Std 65-68g Benchrest bullets do a great job also.

Investigate 2200 powder and AA2230.

Is it possible to just purchase a stock and be able just to drop my existing receiver and barrel into it?
What do I need to tell the stock manufacturer about my rifle.
I am really looking at the AG Composite stocks?

I have used my Sako 6PPC for groundhogs here in VA and also took it to South Dakota once on a PD shoot. I have several varmint guns but shooting the 6PPC is almost like cheating… I load Nosler 70 BT bullets and make a click chart.

A friend had a Nesika J built by Borden in 6PPC and all he ever used it for was groundhogs. 55 gr Nosler if I recall correctly and he had a Nightforce BR on it. He popped them out to 450 yards. It was in a BR stock too. More of a Lee Six style than some of the newer Klub style, and it was fine off a rest or a stick. I was ticked when he sold it with scope for $900 ...

he wasn't very bright.

Just go shoot it.

I had a 6ppc with a 2 oz. trigger and touched it off by accident in a hayfield. My only dumb mistake after many years of hunting. Have no idea where the bullet went. I stayed by my car for an hour to see if anyone was looking for the shooter. It was well over 1000 yards across crop fields to the nearest road. Make sure the rifle has at least 2 pounds trigger pull.

I have played around with my bench rifle with a few 55 gr. ballisitic tips that I loaded hot and ran over the chronograph. Even with a 20 1/2" barrel they were traveling fast. On the trigger, back in the day, thinking that I might want to use the trigger for another application, I went with the Jewell HVR which unlike the BR can be adjusted (and spring switched) to a wide range of pull weights. If you are not doing the whole match style thing with a set of flags, I think that you will be just as well of with a no turn neck. I believe that a friend who is a smith told me that he has one. If you want to go really fast with the 55 I would do some experimenting with LT30 and Xterminator/2230.

I used to hunt coyotes with an AR-15 rifle chambered in 6PPC. My longest one-shot coyote kill is 340 yards with 70-grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet. I think that the 6PPC is one heck of a varmint cartridge. The downside of the AR-15 6PPC setup was losing the brass in the tall grass.

Yes, My plans were to probably install a triggerTech trigger with a safety. Again, when I am woodchuck hunting and walking, I never load my rifle till I have a target sighted. I load the rifle but I dont close the bolt until I am just about to shoot. Basically treating the bolt as a safety.

If you want to go slightly larger case, then consider the 6 Dasher, formed brass is available. Figure 200 fps Velocity over the PPC is realistic.
