6PPC Chambering Problems

You also need to find out how much you are pushing the shoulder back. I would bet that you are not getting any shoulder set back. I had this issue before. You can modify the die or the shell holder.

Sorry I hit reply too soon!

Thanks for all the great information - much food for thought! It was mentioned trimming the cases to correct length was very important so that's just what I did today. I trimmed all the cases to 1.491. Success to some degree! I was able to chamber 65 out of 80 cases after trimming and deburring. Some of the cases chambered very easily and some a little hard however all usable. The remaining 15 cases still would not chamber at all. I ran these cases through my resizing die again - I ran the die down 1/2 turn past where it contacted the shell holder - still no change. The measurements of the cases that chamber seem to be the same as the cases that will chamber however that can't be correct so I assume I'm just not measuring them right. I have attached a picture of 2 cases that won't chamber. One can see a mark on these cases where the die appears to stop.

The ring you see is where the cases are oversize, hit them with some steel wool after resizing then try in chamber I'm betting the ring will appear then.....

Yep. I have had the same thing before. Small base die solves the problem.

Not really once brass has reached its yield point theres no getting it back. A small base die will make it so they chamber but as soon as you hit pressure it just swells back to where it was. Best just to start with new brass its really the cheapest part of shooting....

I'd color it with a marker and see what's rubbing before I started chasing the possibilities ....
I had dj resize & trim my 30cal brass. It wouldn't chamber. I had to really push shoulders due to the neck alignment being so close in my chamber. Just small thousandths can make a difference.

That mirrors my gunsmiths recommendations. Too much yielding that low on the case is mostly a done deal. You can ring die size or small base size it but each firing will go back to where it was.

My smith makes his dies with a small base effect to prevent this problem from developing in the first place. I suggest you start with new brass and monitor the diameter of that brass over repeated firings. If it swells out again and your current dies don’t prevent it, you’ll want to order a sizing die that takes this into account.

I have a way of sizing that web down that I picked up from Charles Huckabe.

You take a regular Redding body die, Chuck it up and bore the shoulder completely out. You now have a die with just the body taper.

With an arbor press, push a case in all the way with some sizing wax on it. You are now going in further than it will with a shell holder. Then, with straight punch that will slip in the Neck, push it back out. Check the size. If still tight, face a little off of the die until it goes in far enough.

This really works. I have resurrected many cases doing this. I have done dies for several friends.

Will try the marker approach right now!

I used a marker on several of the bad cases and then tried to chamber them. You could see the mark in the same place as on the brass in the picture I posted.
