6ppc advice

i have a 6br that i saved up for bought piece by piece as i could afford and i have several factory rifles that i have found the "load" for - i love an accurate rifle more than anybody i know. The only rifle i do not have but really want is the ppc. Read about them and their history for years but just never ran across something i could afford at the time. i dont see a lot of talk about the caliber in forum so i guess its not as popular today. I started out wanting a 222 but im sure i will be happier with ppc. The advice i need from the fellas that have been in my shoes is reason for the post. Unless i find a deal on one then what would be the best route - buy barrel then action then stock and have it put together - that seemed to take a long long time - or just watch for a shot out and buy new barrel for it. I asked my smith for some suggestions and he just asked why i want a 6ppc. maybe he doesnt have reamer for 6ppc !! Anyhow i see a lot of barrels for sale on here but i dont know what length would be appropriate or groove or twist. I shoot at home 100 or 200 yards and thats why i want ppc i guess. i love to take a dime and shoot hole in middle. Anyhow if you wanted a 6ppc how would you start ?

I would buy a new barrel and have your 6br turned into a switch barrel. The bolt face in the 6br rifle will work with the PPC, it is bigger but it should work good if you have a sako extractor or mini m16 extractor. If you just have a factory extractor in your 6br which I am figuring is based on a Remington action you have athe bolt milled for a new extractor ,pin the recoil lug and have the barrel fit to your existing receiver. The PPC is king in short distance shooting. I would go with a 13 twist and shoot the 65-70 grain match bullets.

Never thought about changing barrels - that's why I post !! So is it as easy as screwing barrel off and another on ?? Headspace will be right every time as long as I have it tight . It is a nesika k action and bolt. I will have to ask about extractor OK. Who out there has a barrel !!

I bought my Sako 6mm PPC a year ago used on this forum. I have been very happy with the way it shoots. It is their varmint single shot version with a very nice factory trigger. It has a 1:14 twist and I shoot 100 yd matches with a 68 gr bench rest bullet. Sako also made this gun in a repeater - if you were so inclined. If you put a WTB ad out here - you will get a lot of responses. These were extremely accurate factory built guns and you should be able to find one in good shape for much less than a custom rig.

I used a Remington M 700, that had a 308 bolt face, to shoot a 6 PPC in the IBS Varmint Hunter class for 2 years. I never had the factory extractor fail to pull a fired case. Check with Nesika to see if their bolt face/extractor design will allow you to use both case sizes. Some Stolle and BAT actions are designed to do both. Most 6PPC barrels are 14 twist for 65-68 Gr. bullets.

so if i had a 14 twist barrel fitted to my 6br action all i would have to do is take a barrel wrench and unscrew ppc barrel off and put br barrel back on - if the barrels were marked so they are in same spot then i should be safe as far as headspace ? is this common or do a lot of fellas do this - i mean if my br barrel had a lot of rounds through it and was not accurate anymore i would certainly consider going back with ppc barrel - sure would save a ton of money but would miss the br

Buy once, cry once. BUT there ARE good used BR (6ppc) rigs out there. Contact some of the BR Smiths and see what they have (used) or look on the Classifieds of BR central and elsewhere, maybe a match or two to look also.

To answer this question. Yes a GOOD gunsmith will ream the new barrel with a ppc reamer and set the head space to your action. Then it is that simple Screw one off the other on.

fellas i sure appreciate all the advice and links - and i am a believer in buy once cry once - i actually talked to the owner with ppc on the borden built rifle listed - i am not above switching out barrels but that is a reasonable price !!

Describe your 6 BR build. If it's in a sporter stock, has a sporter barrel, I would not do a switchbarrel. Since we all agree the 6 PPC is the most accurate shortrange chambering, why compromise with a build that will not take full advantage of the PPC's potential. Think custom single shot action,, BR trigger, BR stock w/ 3" fore-end ( no H/S precision), built by a smith who knows the game. Premium barrel - no Douglas, A&B, Shaw or Pac-Nor.

I don't know enough to give an exact description. I think it is nesika k action I will try to post a picture and read back on some of my first post here that I made when it was being built to gain information. I don't even know what type of stock. I have to admit I don't like the idea of messing with it because it shoots great.

A pic would help, but there's no need to worry about the way it shoots. A Nesika K is a benchrest action and a pretty fair one. I owned one until this past summer and it shot very well. It's really no big deal to have a 6PPC barrel chambered for it. You unscrew the 6BR and screw on the 6PPC. Not much more trouble than changing your socks. It's pretty safe to say, if you have a knowledgeable gunsmith chamber your new 6PPC, it will most likely shoot better than the 6BR and certainly no worse.
