6mmBR Short Range Accuracy

Last summer, the Landsend Benchrest Club in Western Colorado had a club shoot....... a dozen or so shooters got together during the covid issues just to have fun and exercise their trigger finger.
The 200 yard agg was won by a dasher. Yes it was windy, yes it was a small group of shooters. On that day..... a fast twist dasher with heavy bullets won the yardage.

Yes sir, on a given condition even the mighty PPC's don't agg...... LOL jim

I , jeffppc, love the plc. I have used it to win against the flavor of the year Super Rocket to win matches out to 500 yrs. I have done the same with the 30br. The ppc dominates in one tiny discipline, group shooting at 100 and 200 yrs. I don't consider 300 because there are so few matches at that distance. It has become irrelevant in 100 and 200 yd score. The 30 br rules in short range score. I guess my point is that unless you confine yourself to one small area of the benchrest game you need more than one tool in your tool box. Every time I see a post from someone who expresses and interest in any of the br games he is immediately pounced on with.....you can't hope to play unless you have ppc. Bull#&$*. If he wants to try different games both short and long he can do it with a 6br. No, not the best in most, but good enough in all, for a new competitor to get his feet wet. I wonder how many over the years have been chased away fron our sport with ppc snobbery?

It was resuscitated so there is interest. So do you have any good input for the good of the group.
At the distances outlined by the OP back in 2008, I’d run a PPC for group. It would also work great for UBR score. If IBS score is the game, it has to be a 30BR since the PPC is at a disadvantage. The OP also indicated he’d like to stretch it out to 600 yards. At that point neither of the above are going to be good choices, so a 6mm of some sort in a fast twist shooting heavies would get the nod.

If I was on a budget and only had one gun, I’d make sure the gun came in at 10.5 pounds and switch barrel the platform so I could shoot the above listed calibers and disciplines and adapt as required based on the yardage being shot. Not ideal, but certainly doable.

Jimmy, I just don't get the logic that a 6BR is good enough for UBR when it's shooting against PPC's, but one must shoot a PPC in group...against PPC's. Why is score the red headed step child when it's arguably harder than group, particularly UBR, where a PPC is not at a scoring disadvantage to a 30 cal bullet hole. If someone beats a strong field of PPC's shooting something else, in score, why is that held to a different standard than beating a field full of PPC's in group? I just honestly don't get it.

Mike. I made no mention of a 6BR, so not sure what you are getting at with me.

Mike, yes score is an agg. of 25 shots all counting ... Group the first shot is a on each group is a free be.... but each has their own sandbox to play in.... and in long range both count at the same time and on the same target...... jim

I agree with you except the only place 10.5 would apply would be IBS, If he is not looking to IBS I would advise a 13.5 lb rifle. If he is only interested in club shoots most are ok to at least 17 lbs that I have attended. One gun do all to 600yd an 8 twist 6 br would be the easiest place to start and be competitive I believe.
