6mmbr build advise

I definately want 6br, Set up for 95, esp 105, 107's. Been reading here for some time. Want something I can carry some, 8 + lbs maybe. Looked into Cooper, I like. Savage not the looks as yet. I have new Rem 700 BDL 22/250 that would like to match up with if possible with barrel, trigger or what else. Should I pick up a nice 308/223 or something and get some one to fix it up in 6br longer barrel? Or do I need the newer stocks to be happy with the accuracy. Like the idea of a repeater, do you lose much? I have the Bob White used gun site, not up to speed there yet. Am 67 years old have over 100 pieces all in wood and blue, half hand guns, but am ready to change if have to. Where would you send me, if you was starting over? Have 600 yd range nearly 100 miles away, any thing closer 200 or 100. Want it to be lot better than me. Thank You, JimNoeller Iowa City IA 52245

Jim, I always say define the mission & buy or build to suit, i.e. paper or fur? Being primarily a varmint guy the Coopers are nice but not exactly something I'd drag through the woods. Also, they only list 1-10 and 1-14 twists, not sure if that is ideal for the bullet weights you want to shoot. I picked up a shot out Remington 700 22-250 cheap and am having it 6BR 1-8, trued/rebarreled/brake(d) and fluted for around 1100 by Hart in NY. . Total in the gun when I get done will be about 1800 w/new H.S. stock & premium trigger. Close to the Coopers, pricewise, but with a longer waiting period to acquire. Savages seem to blow hot 'n cold but they do have the 6br in two different twists, are generally readily available and there is a ton of info on what works in them. Good Luck whatever you choose. Hogpatrol, Thanks for the reply. We are heading the same direction it seems. I worried about the 1-10 in the Coopers, are you pretty sure they won't work "well" for the 105,107's? My Rem BDL was NIB from older inventory beautiful, now with nice Leupold. My idea was getting another good looking BDL stock, putting your Hart or other 6br work on it. Not sure what guy would have, maybe just cobbled up mess, do you think? Good man might not mess with this idea? I like everything you are doing, but didn't think wanted a brake? Is the premium trigger a Jewel? Heavy barrel? How long barrel? I would think about 26" but I'd personally like to keep the weight down for occasional fur, and carry. Trying for the 300-600+ yds shots. 90% of time will be in glass cabinet or out on paper. What is wait time for your Hart work and did you consider others? Probably not much difference in just getting a new 700 action and the H&S stock as the worn gun or not? Other 2 choices are single shot, will your's be a repeater? Single stack detachable or hinged floor plate for the money? How about 40-X is that the big bucks? Hope to hear back. Hope some others help out to. JimNoeller

As a general guide, Shilen has a recommended twist to bullet weight chart for each caliber http://www.shilen.com/calibersAndTwists.html That may help you determine if the 10 twist Cooper suits your needs. As far as a "cobbed up" rifle, for the right price, a competent gunsmith can make a rifle to do exactly what you want better than any mass produced factory rifle.
When I shipped my action in March, Hart estimated a 6 to 9 month wait time for my complete rebarrel, flute, brake, etc. job to be finished. It's a sendero barrel, 28 inches with the brake. It's a BDL action, hinged floorplate but am installing a loading ramp for single shot usage. Trigger will probably be a Jewell hunter varmint w/safety. Hog

I took delivery of my Cooper Phoenix in 6BR the first week of June. I've only run 123 rounds thru it but to say I'm pleased is putting it mildly. I opted for the 1:10 twist. My best 100 yard group is a four shot string .078" Using Sierra 70 Match HP. It has shot 95 Berger VLD's into .253" for 5 shots. 80, 87 and 90 grain do very well also. The only 105's I had on hand were Speer's hunting bullets and they grouped under 1/2" for 5 shots. I use a bipod and rear bag set up. This is right out of the box performance. I expect to improve on these results as I get more familar with the rifle.

If you want a faster twist they'll do it. Cooper makes a fine rifle and if you choose to go that route you won't be disappointed.

Hogpatrol, Thanks for the Shilen site. I checked Berger site for the 105 LVD's also. For sure 1-8 for us. I am green on the forum. Did read your posts and am glad I found you. I need a .17 also. Some friends have them, they take 2 guns (or 3) to the reservations in the Dakota's. Lot of money for glass for us old folks. The CZ's are good enouph for the hmr's than you feel? For the 6br are you going .270 neck size for the Blue Box Lapua in you new Hart? Don't know Blue Box Lapua from a hill of beans, but sounds like what I need, least 100 would do me, they must be short now? Jim,

jefats, Neat Cooper! Good to know they would build 1-8tw. If I go for a new one would go that way for sure. If fell for wood and SS one but bet this stock would shoot better, don't you think? It might also save some weight? The one I handled in wood would not been hard to carry, need that, but yet not a wimpy barrel. The repeater issue vs single shot is still a question for me. About like the hinged floor plate the best, or maybe a shallow single feed magazine. I like what yours is doing right off? What scope is that and how do you like it? Jim,

The scope is a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22X56 which makes the overall weight of the rig , including bipod, near 12 pounds.

The scope weighs 32 ounces alone.
