6mm rem.why isn't it

CatShooter,
Is the 52 grain bullet in your post flat base or boat tail? We do have a note to click on " CLICK HERE FOR AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT FLAT BASE SG CALCULATIONS" in regards to this issue. Boat tail bullets should not be a problem. Just an FYI.

I have an all original Ruger M77 tang safety 6mm Rem with the heavy varmint barrel built in 1968. Its in pristine condition, but only the Lord knows how many rounds have been shot through it. I bought it in about 4 years ago and have put over a couple hundred rounds through it myself. With my hand loads it is a true 1/4 MOA rifle. Bullet holes overlap in groups at 100 yards every time.

I can echo was Ledd says about how accurate those older (if 68 - 83 models) M77V's shot with LOTS of round down the tube. Last year I converted my M77V .308 (to a Benchrest rifle w/ a new 1:10 Kreiger) that I bought new in '83 and didn't even counts the number of round I've fired through her over the years. But I'd have to say several thousands through the original heavy varmint barrel and like Ledd says, they put together REAL tight 5 shot groups at 100 yds. That legacy lives on today and I really ENJOY shooting her resulting in excellent accuracy.

But it is the flat based bullets that have been wining bench matches since forever... and they ARE stable. I think your program is not accurate and needs a major "tweak"

And, while you are here, please explain the justification for changing the BC based on twist - I test a lot, and shoot a lot - and I have never seen any justification for that. Nor, have any of the bullet makers that have been making BC evaluations for the past 30+ years.

Bryan did write something up a few years ago, about bullets having much lower BCs when shot from light weight rifle barrels, than they did when shot from heavy rifle barrels...

.... I am still trying to understand that one too. It absolutely defies ALL known ballistics. ;D ;D ;D

Ok guys, this is the kind of information that I was looking for.You will never hear me say anything bad about a 6mm rem.I too, think it is one of the best 6mm cartridges out there.
I have to agree with Cat,Ledd and the rest of you guys.and you all brought up some interesting thoughts.
Mine is a 6mm Rem and not a 244,it is a 9 twist bought in 1980 by my wife for my birthday gift.It will shoot 1/4" all day long at 100 yds.
I do know mine will shoot the Sierra 75 gr hp extremely well at 100,not so good at 200 and300.IT WILL NOT shoot the 85 hp the 90's,95's at 100,200,300 yds.Maybe I do have other issues that I have not put my finger on.I will try to find out what is wrong though.
Going to build another 6mm as I would not change anything on this particular rifle. If I do find a cure, other than rebarreling ,restocking and such,I will post the news.
Have to do something,my crows are getting smart in my part of the country. They like to sit at 300 and laugh .

Thanks for your help
Jim

Growing up, I watched my grandma shoot a whitetail every year with a 6mm. It's a Remington 600 Mohawk. I keep it fed 90gr Nosler BT's, and she still gets a buck every year. I'd love to have an AI version.

Your twist is probably too slow. My Ruger won't shoot 85gr and heavier bullets very well at all. I thinks it's a 1 in 10 or 1 in 11. Can't remember. I'm sure your rifle's twist is pretty slow too.

I've found on ocassion (with various chamberings) where a rifle will shoot great at 100 yards, but when you take it to 200 or 300, it doesn't do worth a darn. Found that it's usually because I am running on the ragged edge of max bullet weight for the twist of the barrel. One cure is obviously to try a lighter bullet, the other is to try and find accuracy with the same bullet at speeds that are 100-200 fps faster. The extra speed can help stabilization at longer ranges as well, but not always the case.

CatShooter,
Those are questions best asked of Bryan. The new math back in the 60s did me in. lol ! Go to the Applied Ballistics string on this website and post this question there is my suggestion.
