6mm PPC Sako Varminter for Heavy Bullets

I want the 6mm PPC guys to respond please.
I have a Sako Varminter Factory Rifle and it needs re-barreling.
I am planning on a 1:10 Twist to be able to shoot 80-85 gr bullets.
Considering that the rifle is being use for small - medium deer/buck hunting in South Africa and in hunting, shots are seldom further than 250 meters.
I don't want to change this rifle to 6mm BR or BRX and it cannot be changed into a XC because of the short action.
I want to keep it standard PPC.

1.Do you think I the 1:10 Twist will do justice or should I keep to the Original 6mm PPC Specs and lighter bullets.
2.Would a barrel longer than 22---24" be" better"?

Bongo

After reading your post a couple of times, I'm confused on whether you are currently using the PPC for these animals. If you are currently using it.... if it were me..... I'd leave it as is if it is working. Having shot a Ruger 6ppc more than a few times ;) It is my experience that the key to success with a PPC is it's accuracy.... and not necessarily it's knock down power.

Thus if you can keep your shots under 250 with great accuracy with what you have...... why change it to something that you're not sure whether it will work or not. I would be hesitant to recommend using the larger bullets with the PPC for larger game. WD

Bongo,,,,welll if it wus me Id go with a 13 twist Krieger bbl...that way you can shoot 80's and still have great accuracy with the 60-70gr bullets,,,,IMHO...Roger

I have a Ruger Varmint 6PPC with a 26" 12 twist barrel. It shoot the 75 vmax awesome and they are running 3340 which I have been told is smokin for a 6PPC. I have not shot a deer with the ppc yet but I have used the 75 vmax in 243's and they are devastating and I wouldn't hesitate to use my PPC to shoot a deer. If I was going to rebarrel id go with a 10 myself and 26" tube. Every 10 twist 243 I have shoots the light bullets great and I feel the PPC should keep its inherant accuracy.

I appreciate the responses.

The reason I asked these questions is:

1. I used 80 gr 6mm Hornady GMX bullets. I believe that a strong bullet will assist penetration with body shots, despite the light caliber. I know shot placement is the #1 factor!...no matter what caliber is used. Problem is, the GMX bullet is very long and keyholes. So I we know the twist is wrong for them.

2. I already have a Pacnor Super Match (not Stainless/not fitted ...yet) 1:10 Twist: 28" long. Bought it because my 6mm PPC was bought second hand and has probably shot 5000 rounds already ad need reballing.

I must decide if this barrel will decrease on velocity due to the twist if I shoot the normal 70gr bullet.
I know the velocity for the 80 gr GMX will be lower as it is heavier, but the bullet has velocity grooves (if I may call it that) and is as long as some 90 gr bullets.

I zero this rifle at 200m and because we use Leopold scope with a "Varminter" reticle" together with a rangefinde. We shoot this rifle well up to 450 yards.
Since the availability of rangefinders and scopes that can be set to distances in the rangefinder, it becomes easy to shoot longer distances, even with lower velocity calibers.

Again, the goal is a super accurate rifle out to 250-300 yards, no recoil and a well made bullet to penetrate medium - small deer ( Springbuck/Impala)

I can swop the barrel for a twist of say 1:12, but will it stabilize the heavier/longer bullets.

Was wondering if it is allowed to post my e-mail address?
