6mm hunting gun

I don’t have any 6mm and want to build one for deer hunting. Need recommendations for which 6mm to go with. Want a 22” plus brake on the barrel. Needs to feed good and shoot a 105-115 at 3000 fps minimum. Will a Dasher do this? Also thought of going 6x47 or going with the new 6SST from Rich Sherman. The 6SST will run up to 3300-3500 fps. Will be used to shoot/practice on steel out to 700 yds. But main use will be hunting Whitetails. Looking for low recoil, accurate and decent barrel life.

You can take the basic 6mm cartridge AI it and accomplish everything you want. Putting a forty degree shoulder on it increases case volume by 10% and gives you the velocity you want. The nice thing is that you can use standard 6mm cartridges and fire form them; the standard cartridge will give you great accuracy and you are using the cartridge as you fire form it.

Not mentioned, but I am very partial to the 6mm-284. One of mine has just exceeded 2,000 rounds and it will still group inside of 2" @ 600 yards, and is one of my favorite cartridges to use on deer.

Lapua 6.5-284 is my preferred brass of choice, and with the chamber set up for zero headspace, 300 yard accuracy is nearly always under an inch while fireforming, making these loads excellent for sight in and varmints, with more than a few deer also being shot and killed with fireform loads.

That’s very good barrel life out of a 6-284. Maybe the 6SST is the way to go. I would just idle it back and hope for a good mid range velocity node of around 3200 fps. I don’t want to have to push hard to get to 3000 fps plus with 105 gr or heavier bullets. Having a hard time deciding what to go with. Probably over thinking it.

Somebody tell me about the 6SST. Please.

I own 32 rifles and pistols in various 6mm cartridges, with no two guns having the same chambering!

I don’t know a lot about it. Rich Sherman of Sherman wildcats developed it. I believe it was designed for the PRS guys. If you google 6mm Sherman Short Tactical some info will come up. Also threads on long range hunting forum. His Sherman shorts are based off the RSAUM. Shortened , with body taper blown out. Guys are getting very impressive numbers out of these cases in varying caliber from 6mm up to the 338SS. The 338 is pushing 250 bergers close to 2900 fps. All this performance and they run out of s short action. I have a 6.5 Sherman based on the 270 Winchester. Performs as advertised.

I have been running a 6 mm Remington Ackley with a 27" Pac-Nor for the past few years. After settling on the 115 gr Berger VLD Hunting at 3150 fps it has taken six deer and a few coyotes between 120 and 366 yards. It always expands and exits on cross rib cage shots. While I would not do this cartridge again (technology favors shorter cartridges today.) I would stick with the 115 Berger Hunting VLD and find a cartridge to push it around 3100 if possible. If I built a light hunting rifle today it would be a 6XC and if I could get the 115 close to 3100 I would go with it. Think about how long a barrel you want, they makes a big difference for some of the 6s.

Good Luck!

Glad to hear the 115 Berger hunting performs good on game. I’m leaning towards going with the 6SST with a 22” barrel. 3200 fps shouldn’t be a problem with the 115 or 105 gr bullets. Strictly a hunting gun and don’t want a long barrel on this one. Be used in tree stands and blinds. Some walking.

I'm impressed, seriously. I thought I was pushing the limit with 5 different 6mm cartridges. Of all of them my favorite is the 6mmAI. Easy to fire form, gives the cartridge an extra 10% volume capacity while increasing the FPS an extra 150-200, and the 40 degree shoulder all but eliminates the need for trimming. Just a fun cartridge. My next will be a 6mm-284.

Sounds like a regular old .243 Win would do great.
I agree...I been thinking about a Savage 110 Predator with the accustock and camo design. Looks like a good rifle
with 24 inch barrel for a plain ol .243.:D. I could have bunch of fun with it then spin on a new custom barrel when
I burn it up from all the shooting I would do...:p:D

6 Creedmoor, it's a very accurate no muss no fuss cartridge. My 24" barrel will easily run the 105s over 3100 but I run them about 3070 on a lower node.
