6mm Grendel 1000 yards

A few of us in our 1000 yards bench rest club have been discussing the possibility of a 6mm Grendel (be it modified in some shape).

Any thoughts or experiences on this.
I understand that it's possibly "flogging a dead horse", and it's been built, used, and dismissed as a worthy 1000 yard cartridge......

It should be close to the 6mm Grinch that some have played with. I think when it is all said and done you will end up duplicating a 6mm BR with a slightly different shaped case. I don't consider that to be a negative at all because the straight BR case still does quite well at long range. Experimenting with different stuff is what makes benchrest shooting so much fun.

Been working on my 6mm Predator which is a 6mm Grendel and was working on OAL and ogive length for my ARP barrel and I'm at 2.348" right at the lands with the Nosler 105s. Hopefully will be finishing build here quick.

I have three 6grendel setups two in AR and a Ruger American Predator with and Excaliber 24" MTU taper barrel which I have just broken in the barrel as of yesterday shooting at 100 yards. The 105 Bergers hit the lands at .346" . Of the bullets I have tested it seems that the 107 SMK and the 105 Bergers do really well. I have also had great luck with the 95 SMK. I have used CFE, and H4895 with good accuracy. Next shooting trip will be with chrono. Oh I also shoot all of my rounds in all of these 6G's with bobsled's and I typically load at about .005 to .010 off lands.

I have had my 6 Grendel gasser out past a grand a couple times.

I cant get the 105s fast enough to make it effective much past that.

But it is accurate enough to keep me happy.

Below is 105 Hybrids with Varget at 600 yards.

Robert Whitley has some terrific ideas on cartridge calibers. You speak of the 6mm Grendel. He has that called the 6MM AR. It takes the 6.5 grendel case and necks it to 6mm. It is so light in the die you will miss it if you are not paying attention. It shoots terrific. So well, in fact, the US Military just adopted it as 6mm ARC with a 0.0030 shoulder reduction. I’ll stay with my 6mmAR. Look it up at www.6mmAR.com.

I shoot my 6mmFatRat in my AR which is a improved 6G with 40 degree shoulder. Load is 95gr smk at 2870 fps. I've been as far as 1122Y and when it's not windy I can hit a 19" steel plate almost every time.

Last year on a windy day I was shooting against some friends at 1000Y against superior cartridges as far as wind bucking ability, but because I could fire fast I was able to deduce what the wind was doing in the lulls and gusts quicker.
Basically by the time they were ready to fire the next shot with their single shots I had fired 2-3 rounds, so I got to lay down a series of hits before the wind changed. In contrast by the time they fired their next round they'd miss much more often on that same steel on either side of it because the wind had picked up or let off. It was actually fun for me and a bit frustrating for them I think.

I usually use a 6mmBR in a bolt gun and their isn't a big difference in the wind between the 95gr and a 105gr going the same speed. Some but not much.

I thought about going with a 22 cal version but I fear bullet blow ups with the 90gr class bullets which seems to bite me in the ass every time I try super long bullets.

You might ask others who have shot their Grendel that far what slope of riser they use with a given bullet. I have a 20 degree riser blocks under my scope and still run out of elevation with a 60 MM Sightron III scope. Been a while since I shot it that far - but I think it was around 800 yards shooting 123 grain Scenars at max velocity.

Finally finished putting this one together and loaded up some with 27.8XBR and 105 RDfs no chronograph and had it on target at 100 with 2 shots. From there was ringing a 6" steel plate at 370. Got real windy my buddy was impressed. Will be taking the chronograph next time and stretch this one out. It's a fun gun to shoot for sure.

I'm very curious how fast the 27.8 XBR with 105 RDF's went. Also, about your group size?

Thank You!

I have a 243 LBC (“Les Baer Custom”) Turbo 40 that I’m about to start testing. Built on a highly modified Rem 722 bolt action. Shoulder is 40 degrees and neck is .269”.
Shot little bughole groups during barrel break in with a random break in load thrown together so I’m sure it will shoot great

Picture posted below of some my various 6mm brass to give a visual comparison on the 243 LBC T40.

Center: 6.5 Grendel necked down to 6mm with neck turned and false shoulder set at proper length for fireforming to 243 LBC T40.

@Ledd Slinger do you have the fireformed water capacity of the 6 LBC? (... and how does it compare to the Dasher?)

An impressive looking little cartridge and a great project for 6mm lovers!

I want to say the water capacity of the 6 Grendel/LBC I did on a Howa Mini was very close to 35gr +- a half grain or so. I remember checking it along with a 22 and 20 Grendel at the same time to get an idea of capacities. It seems they were a little better than halfway between a PPC and the BR cases respectively.
