6mm for deer and target suggestions

If you’re using DBM, then without a doubt 6BR/BRA/GT and a 105 hybrid or 108 elite hunter. Lots of ways to make it feed.

If not, 6x47 or 6XC.

The smaller you go the better it’s going to stay in tune.

Anything but a Creedmoor!

You can use, almost Any, of, the Short Action receiver's as, NO "Special" Magazines are Required to, smoothly Feed, the 6 XC cartridge even with, Long, high BC, Bullets AND,..
Barrel Life, is Better than, "Most" of, the other 6 MM's that, produce 3,000 fps+ Velocities If, wanting to,.. Hunt Varmints, Deer / Antelope and shoot a little Steel for, Field Practice, which We, All,.. NEED !
Bbl life averages around, 2,200 to 2,500 rds ! Your "Mileage", can / MAY,.. Vary !
The XC's LONG, "NecK", also Allows you to Keep, Bullet "Seating" OUT of, the dreaded, "Dough Nut" Area !

I Did a LOT of research on, the 6 XC and I WASN'T gonna spend nearly, $3,000 on, a "Barrel Burner" Rifle For, the many Uses that, I wanted, Sage Rats, PD's, Coyotes to, Deer / Antelope, Plus, Steel Plates to, 850 Yards.
The Stiff, .707 Muzzle diameter, W/ Brake, Makes "Cold Bore" Shots, a repeated, "Reality" and with, Pleasant,..
Low Recoil. ( The Jewell, BR Trigger,. "Help's" with this Rifles,.. awesome, accuracy ! )

I had a 6 Arc that I was using for deer but recently built another 6 Dasher to use as my fun gun/deer rig. It is performing well with Hybrids but I haven't started load development with a hunting bullet yet. I had all the components to run the Dasher. If you have brass it might be worth it to fireform them out while you break in a new barrel. I'm getting 2975 with Varget through a 26in barrel with Hybrids.

My next barrel might be a 6GT as I have a ton of H4350 to burn up.

Cheers,
Toby

that's one of the main reasons I asked the question. I didn't want a barrel burner like a 243ai, or 6 creed. Id be fine with 2000 plus rounds. Think maybe some more researh on the 6xc is in order.

I Built mine, during Covid,.. T'was, a Gift ( First, $2,000. was from, Trump ! )
Just Before Covid there Was, a LOT of Info ( Sadly, there was, a LOT of, "Confusion", also ! ) on Here about, the 6 XC ( Version One vs Version, 2 ). Search 6 to 10 years Back and you should find Plenty of Info.
4, 1,000 yard "Championships" were Won with it, around, 2015 ish, w/ 115 gr. DTAC's, I believe.
Good Luck w/ your Choice !

If your max range is 375 yards a 6MM ARC will do it w8th factory loads in an AR or a bolt action and should get extremely long barrel life as the case capacity is fairly low as is the pressure.

My AR shoots the 103 ELD X really well.

With your 350-375 yard limit on deer, the 6ARC will work just fine. If you don't mind the non-standard bolt face, that would be the most economical choice.

For standard bolt face stuff, the 6BR is just fine for what you plan to do with it. Out of a 22" barrel (the longest hunting barrel I would recommend) you can get a 108 going 2650, which still puts it over 1800 fps at over 500 yards.

If you step up to the BRA, Dasher, or GT you just get more of everything (velocity, effective distance, recoil, etc.). Not that I am trying to talk you out of going that direction, just letting you know that it is more that what you actually need.
The Dasher and GT both have good brass offerings from Peterson, Alpha, and Lapua.

I have a ton of virgin 6.5 Grendel brass that was left over from when I sold my 6.5 Grendel upper. So that's also a consideration, or perhaps do somthing with this barrel and get a new upper for the 6 arc.

I Went with the 6mm ARC. Berger bullets have done the best for me in terms of small groups. Hornady CX is doing very good & I am happy to give up very little accuracy for the performance the CX offers. YMMV

In my instance I was looking for a cartridge for the CZ 527 & the 7.62 x 39 bolt face. If you are looking at a 308 bolt face then 6BR may be a better choice.

You can run Large or Small Rifle Primers out of the 6XC too. I have 2 - 6XC’s and love them. 1 is a 7.5 twist 24” barrel and the other is a 1-8 twist 28” barrel. They both do good out to 1000 yds. Haven’t shot anything but paper but if the opportunity presents itself I don’t think I will be disappointed.

So I'd like to have a barrel chambered before deer season, and then after ill probably shoot paper and steel with it also. I'm pretty set on a 6mm. Id like the easy button for reloading as far as finding a good load and keeping it tuned. I was thinking 6br, but I wanted a little more juice, as I may possibly have shots at 350-375 yards (absolute max.) I was thinking along the lines of a 6xc, or a 6BRDX. Any other suggestions? I have a lot of cci450s Id like to use and 6br lapua brass, but if something will do the job better ill get set up for that, plus who wouldn't want another cartridge in the stable?

Thanks fellas.
For what you're wanting to do..... 6xc. It feeds fine from a magazine and has the reputation for accuracy. I had one built with a 10tw barrel and am completely happy with it. JME.WD
