6mm Dasher Project - Stock Input...,updated w/pics)

Well, I have everything to put a complete rig together: Panda, Bartlein LV 1:8, Jewell Trigger, Kelbly Rings, Weaver T36 and a Tom Meredith TMBR stock.

I need some input on the TMBR stock that I have. Do you think its well suited for a 600-1000 range setup? Or should I consider a heavier long range stock? My original project was going to be a PPC and that is why I have the TMBR stock.

ridgeway,

Most guys shooting long range want the long range stocks for the weight and extra length. With the 17lb limit, you have a lot of room to play with. But, alot of the guy use regular benchrest stocks.

I think you stock would work fine. I don't think you would want a 10.5# gun. You could look at adding a weight system or some weight to the stock.

I do as Mark has said...I use a conventional short range,22-30 oz) stock....it is a cupla inches shorter than the long range stocks...this and the light weight make the rifle very "nose heavy",,I have to be very careful how I hold and shoot it or it will raise up out of the rear bag....I shoot ok with it ...but wuld rather have a long range stock....
With your bbl/action/scope combo you shuld end up around 12.5 lbs.....as suggested with a weight system you culd add 3 lbs quickly,,and this wuld be wonderful....then you culd pull the weight out and change bbls and be bak to shootin point blank in a few minits....Roger

I use to shoot a 6ppc in a TMBR stock. A great stock for that application. But for a true long range stock, I'd peddle it and put the parts into a Tracker stock, whick IMHO is better suited for the long range game, with it's 3" longer forend that's parallel to the butt stock for straight tracking in recoil.

Tom does weight systems on his stocks. Mine had one, but if I remember right, he will only add a pound or pound and a half, which ain't gonna be enough to balance a 1000 yard barrel.

mate

I have/had rifles long range Dashers built on both the Tracker and the Baby Tracker.

Both rifles very very pleasant to shoot in the Dasher, but the Baby Tracker took a little more driving due to being nose heavy. I could have added weight to the butt though.

After having both these rifles, I felt that when I shot the Baby Tracker rifle that it fitted my shooting style better, and it felt better to drive over the larger Tracker stock.

So, I sold the Baby Tracker and Tracker stocked rifles, and now am putting together a rifle with components that best suit my body shape/shooting style, which happens to be a Kelbly Klub stock. They fit me well and I find them very comfortable to use.

It will be wearing a 28" HV barrel, so I expect to add 3lbs of lead to the butt to balance it.

I think you can only really get away using a Short range BR stock in long range when using a caliber with minimal recoil, like a BR's and Improveds.

Time will tell if I am right in my choices, or I will be ordering another Tracker stock....... Oh well...

Cheers

Yeah..I'm still undecided on what to do stock wise. I send the barrel and bolt out to Kelbly's today. Should be done in a couple weeks.

The ONLY way to go is a Shehane ST-1000 Tracker. I've shoot my Dasher in a Tracker stock in both IBS 600/1000yards,rewarded many 3-5" groups) and shoot is alot in F-Class Prone as well, turned in a 200/13X at the last match). The Tracker is IMO, impossible to beat on the bench, and with a Dasher and light recoil, handles F-Class prone shooting just as well..Good luck whatever you choose...You'll love the Dasher!!

If your gun is at Kelblys ...take a look at their 1000yd stock...it is a beauty...I have built two rifles with that stock for others......wish I had one of my own...ahhaaha.......Roger

Don't forget about the McMillan Tooley MBR Stock. It's an awesome stock. I have owned three and just bought another one. They are excellent on the bags and great for long range bench rest comp or long range varmint hunting.

Here is what I have so far...still needs bedded, cleared and glued yet. Its getting there...

Great photo of Dasher case in progress. What was your complete procedure for fire-forming? Did the neck-turn provide enough of a false shoulder?

Also did you paint those wild RC cars on www.ridgewaybodies.com ?

I was basically a spectator in the fire forming of my brass. My friend did all the work,johara1). I was there to learn how to do it and would hate to spread any misinformation about the process.

First off, the cases are expanded using a 6mm K&M expandiron and the necks are turned down the fit the chamber. The trial and error part was obtaining the depth. Jim took the bolt apart to get a better feel how the case fit the gun. You need a nice snug fit at the false shoulder. After the neck turner is set, you are golden. The process took quite some time. The turned part of the neck is then sized with the dasher die, nothing else. Other misc brass prep can be done such as squaring the primer pocket, uniform flash hole and taper the inside of the neck with a K&M vld reamer.

We loaded 29gr of varget and a Berger 105 VLD bullet. The bullet is jammed...I 'think' .020'.

Fire and then out comes a sweet looking case!

Yes, I paint the bodies on my site. I'll be clearing the stock with automotive clear coat.

Its been awhile, but the Dasher is all finished. The only rounds out of the gun are fire forming loads only. The agg in the center of the target is 5 rounds and measures 0.168'! I hope I can find a load with formed Dasher cases that shoots in the ones!

Anyhow, here are the crappy phone pics...
