6mm br a starter cartridge?

i competed in my first match this weekend with a xr-100 in 22-250 and had a great time. now i'm starting to think about a "real" benchrest rig. my question is, would a 6br norma with say a 10 twist in a 10.5# rifle be a reasonable choice to allow trying different disciplines, short range score, group and longer ranges too)? i would prefer to do my loading at home and not have that to deal with at the match. would replacing the barrel be all thats required to switch to 30br or 6ppc at a later date?

Congrats on your fine shooting.

If you're looking for "pure" performance in group matches at 100/200, most of the "experts" would tell you to step right into the 6PPC. Perhaps pick up a used rifle from Shooters Corner.

If you want to shoot 300, 500, 600 etc., then a 6BR with an 8-twist makes sense. We've found at my local club that a 6BR with an 8-twist shoots the short bullets well enough to finish consistently in the top 3 at our Club's monthly 100-yard match, bettered only by a slow-twist custom 6PPC or 30BR. The same 6BR rifle, fitted with 105s, then took "all the marbles" in the 600-yard match.

FWIW, the owner of that 6BR was considering getting a 14-twist barrel to shoot the 100-yard match, but decided against it. For him, being in the Top 3 at our informal club 100yd match was good enough, and he couldn't justify the cost of the extra barrel. He just uses 80-grainers at 100,with N135) and 105-grainers at 600,with N540).

Mr. Moderator,

What is this "N-125" you speak of ??? :)

MODERATOR: Yikes... TYPO... my bad. Make that Vihtavuori N135. One-Three-Five.

I have a 1 in 8 twist, and use it at 100 yds all the time, with 80g Berger's over Varget, and it works vary well, in the low .2 on one of my good days. At our club, you cant shoot out past 330 yds.
Mike.

how would the recoil of a 6br shooting 80g bullets compare to a 6ppc shooting 68's? do you think a 10.5# gun is reasonable? how about with heavier bullets, say 108's?

thanks again for the input!
