6mm - Berger 108 question.

I’m fairly new to the 6mm world. I have a 6BR. Norma and a 6BRA. I have been using 105 VLD target bullets in both. Someone who I know says the 108 boat tail targets shoots a little better and are pretty easy to tune.

So here is my question; if the 108 is a great bullet what about the 108 elite hunter? It has a slightly better BC.would it be equal or better?

But I’ve also read on here somewhere that the 105 shoots better in the wind? 108 boat tail targets vs. 108 elite hunter vs. 105 vld target. Any of you with experience I’m all ears.
Thanks ahead of time.

I have shot many of the 105 hybrids along with the 108 BT's and they both shoot great, no experience with the Elite Hunter but can't go wrong with the other 2.

The Most accurate Bullet, in my 1-7.5 twist, 6 XC is the 107 gr. SMK with, a "Lite Jam",..
They even "out shoot", the 108 gr., Berger, Elite Hunters ( 2's vs 3's with, the Berg's, so far ) maybe, I need to "Play" with, the Bergers, a little more But,.. WHY ??,.. since the Sierra's, are almost,.. 50% cheaper !

I have shot both the Berger 108 target and the 105 vld.
The easy button for a 6mmBR is the 108 Berger (or 107 Sierra) with right around 30gn of Varget and the bullet seated into the lands .005 to .015. In a good barrel this normally gives excellent accuracy.
The VLDs are a lot harder to get and keep in tune. Unless you are shooting at long range (over 600 yards) I wouldn't worry about a slight increase in BC. (.545 for the VLD vs .522 for the 108). If you must have the extra BC either the Berger 105 or 109 hybrids are probably the way to go. If you want even better accuracy Bart's 6mm bullets are a step up.
The one thing I have learned about shooting is that if you miss a wind call you end up in the 9 ring (or worse) with a higher BC bullet it may be by a fraction less but it still isn't good. Don't go down the BC rabbit hole. Shoot the bullet that gives you the best groups on paper and is easy to keep in tune.

I tried them in my BR but not the BRA. I couldn’t get them to shoot with the bergers. Might need to jam them and try again. They are definitely cheaper.

Not chasing the bc rabbit hole, was just wondering what others experiences was. I’m just starting to shoot competitive (2nd match this Saturday). Gun shoots great but I’m about to have to restock bullets and was considering trying 108’s. Both rifles shoots very very well, but wouldn’t mind a little BC forgiveness… even if it’s only a fraction.

What type of match and what distance?

When First trying, the 107's I did some Research HERE, on AS and that's what, everyone Recommended,. Lite Jam
The New SMK's, ARE "Pointed" ( Nose Tip's are "Skimmed" for, a higher BC ).
There are MANY, older Posts, on this Bullet.

600 yd f-class
For 600 yard F-Class the 108gn berger target is a really good bullet. I have shot it and the berger 109 hybrid in many 600yd F-class matches. These are the two readily available bullets I would recommend. As far as which of these two bullets will shoot better at that distance it depends on which bullet/load combination is best tuned to the prevailing conditions. Again the 109 will have a very slight advantage due yo its higher BC. Both are fairly easy to tune but in my opinion the 108 is somewhat easier to tune.
If you really get into F-class especially at 800 & 1000 yds. try a 7mm for your next build (there is a reason a lot of the top F-class shooters go with 7mm) I do notice better wind drift with the 180 and 184 berger hybrid 7mm bullets than the 6mm. The downside to the 7mm is higher recoil but it is manageable. Hope this helps good luck at your match.

I am in the midst of deciding which bullet to use for in an 8 twist 6 BRA for F class competition... So far, I have tested 108 Beger, 107 Sierra, 105 Berger VLD, and 105 Bart's Hammers with Varget powder and Remington 7.5 primers.

So far, I can say there is no obvious winner at 500 meters in a very wind switching environment.... But all of them can shoot very well at 100 yards.

I've decided the Berger 108 likes to jump about 18/1000" and the Sierra prefers 12/1000" jump. I'm still testing the Barts Hammer and Berger VLDs in the lands. Both of those look pretty good but, I have one more big test outing at 500 meters before I form an opinion.

This is just where I am at. Good Luck!

One thing I’ve learned is chasing BC when accuracy is your priority is the wrong choice. As a benchrest shooter I’ve tried it looking for an edge, at the end of the day, it usually doesn’t pan out. Most people are speaking so highly of the 108 bt and 105 hybrids for good reason. I’d stick with those if possible in my opinion. Not saying you can’t get another bullet to shoot better sometimes but overall they are hard to beat and kind of an easy button. 108’s like a little jam and hybrids like a little jump for me. I agg’d 1.7” at 600 yards for 8 targets at the freedom nationals last year using 108 BT not even sorted. I plan on sticking with them.
