Shorter strings aren't an option in competition: you sign up to shoot, you get 20 shots for score in,usually) 30 minutes. Rarely is there time to stop & clean your barrel & even if you could you'd then be unsure whether those shots remaining would need sight adjustments for the clean bore. Unsettling at best when your focus should be on the wind....
