6mm-06?

I have an early 80's model remington 700 chambered in 30-06 that the barrel was pretty neglected on. I'm wanting salvage the action and bolt and rebarrel. My question is, since I have several .30 cals already is the 6mm-06 worth the trouble or should I just go with the practical 25-06? The gun will primarily be used for varmints,hogs , and for my wife to shoot whitetail in South Texas. I have access to a friend's reloading bench and can load whenever I need to but the 25-06 is a pretty common round off the shelf at academy. Info greatly appreciated.

Is the 6-284 same bolt face as the 06? If I can 1200-1500 rounds out of it I would be happy.

I have a 6-06 AI and have no regrets, it is a 12 twist and can shoot 87 gr Vmax's

I’ve played with a handful of 6mm wildcats, but I don’t believe any of them would beat a 25-06 for your specific purpose.

Don't be afraid of that 6mm-06. They are great for deer and antelope and would work great for your purpose. I have been running one for over 30 years.

Since you're a Texan and probably live near some very nice deer and a great population of feral hogs, consider the 6.5-05. it's a soft shooter ( not uncomfortable recoil) with 120-130 great bullets a flat trajectory and decent barrel life. JME. WD

Only reason I stray from 6.5 is because i have 260 already. It's a feral pig machine with a 130 grain vld. I'm looking that out of the box ride now.

I think you'd be better off with a 25-06. Factory ammo is available and you could load very effective 100 Gr whitetail loads that would kick like a 243 Win.

If your desire for 6-06 is becauae you have a long action. 243 will likely feed just fine from an 06 mag box. At least 3 of my L/A'sfeed 243 just fine.
If its for awesome factor then by god get started!
240 weatherby has factory ammo.

26", 10 twist; nothing wrong with 8 or 9 twist if you want to run the really heavy bullets. Necking down .25-06 Brass works well. The 6-06 feeds better through the .30-06 magazine than the 6-284 (I have both), has a longer neck for heavy bullets, and certainly cheaper than buying .240 Wea. brass and the problems associated with belted brass. Does a great job on whitetail; usually DRT. If not depending on factory ammo (who uses that ??), it's a great choice.

Morning!
Having access to reload and having your own gear are two totally different things. Considering you can grab a box of .25-06 in several bullet weights, sure makes Life easy. And you're not relying on anyone but yourself, and that's usually a smart move...

BUT!!!

If you do go 6mm-06, you just might find yourself enjoying the reloading aspect of hunting! If/when that happens, you'll be buying some reloading equipment of your own in the near future!

Choice is always yours! But, I say do the 6mm-06. Just start saving for a Rockchucker reloading kit and a set of dies

Why not 6mm Remington no Fire Forming 7or8 Twist will drive 107's at 2800 to 3000
If you don't shoot it a lot you will be fine ???

I just finished an 18 month project with a 6 Ackley. Launching the 115 grain Berger VLD Hunting at 3025 fps. My rifle accepts an overall length similar to a 240 Weatherby and it allowed me to put almost as much powder in it as a 240 Weatherby. My bolt went out to Gre-Tan to have the firing pin bushed so the primers hold up quite well. It was the best $110 spent during the project. My velocity with the 115 maxed out around 3100, according to the loading manuals any of the big sixes max out in a similar neighborhood. Using a 28" PacNor 8 twist barrel and neck turned brass I can shoot 1" groups at 250 when I do my part. It matches the reticle in a Leupold 6.5-20 with Varmint Hunters reticle out to 600.

After all of this work I shot a buck at 366 yds and a doe at 322 yds last season. In both cases the bullet exited and the damage was epic. No plans to part with the rifle and I have learned a bunch working with the 6 Ackley.

My cousin in Texas does the same thing with a 25-06 Ackley from his Cooper. The Cooper factory targets were shot with the Sierra Game King Hollow Point and they were impressive. If I was shooting whitetails inside of 350 that would be my bullet of choice. If I had it do over again I would do a 25-06 or 25-06 Ackley and skip the neck turned brass.
