6BR with 87 VMax and Varget load data **Updated**

I'd do some smaller changes around the #'s 2 and 3. Got two charges on almost the same elevation. # 4 is a long way elevation wise from #3 or # 5.

Frank
I thought the same, but I just figured it was a POA thing. 3” dot seems a bit big to hold tight on, dunno what reticle he had.
I am using a NF SHV on 20x. Seemed able to hold center confidently. I don't know what happened with #5, different shoulder pressure maybe? I always get stuck on the small group and forget the whole point of a ladder is to find elevation consistency.
Maybe I'll try a few groups with 29.3 to 30.1 in .2gr increments.

Please let me know what you find out. I couldn't get those thing to shoot worth a crap. It was incredibly disappointing. I also found out that you need a longer free bore than a 104 for that bullet or you'll be into the donut. I can't believe I'm the only person that's ever found that out. But I see guys shooting 87s with zero free bore in there so far past the donut it's not even funny.

Dave, how did the 87 vmax work out for you? I'm going to try some in my 6br for pdogs.
I got it up to 3040 FPS with 31.3 of Varget without excessive pressure and accuracy on par with earlier loads. Worked great last year on PD's. I was short on time for this Junes shoot and loaded 200 rds of the same load. Plan to do more accuracy tuning afterwards. I am putting it in a chassis to fit me better and have upgraded to a FFP optic. I have the VMax sitting .005" short of rifling. I didn't try any seating depth tests yet.
I bought this barrel used from a member on here, it's one of Urbanrifleman's barrels. I need to pick up one of his 223AI barrels and can fireform some brass on this years shoot.

I would be very interested to know how you got that to shoot.

Are you using older 87s ? Or brand new ones?

If you want a Rem 700 223a I have a bunch sitting here. They are good ones.

Thanks for your reply Dave. Your 300 yard test target is very telling.
I like what I see. I bought the 87vmax's from Bradley when I had him chamber me another barrel late last year.
I'll be trying these in a CBI 8 tw. 6br with VV135. I hope I can stumble upon something close to as accurate as yours.
I've searched the archives and there are other pdog shooters having success using this bullet in a 6br. On the other hand I know others that can not get them to shoot. I figure I have to try.

I chambered two barrels for friends in 6MM AI and they had good success with this bullet as well. Albeit much faster! I think they were just north of 3400 FPS.

Are you using a bushing die for sizing, if not try one, this may elevate the doughnut

30 grains Varget, CCI 450, 87 VMAX, .010 into the rifling. 4 (5) shot groups agg. .287 from Kreiger barreled Remington. Hard to beat this with mass produced bullets. Start at 28.00 grains and work up. You will be happy with this combo.
I use the same load in a Savage LRPV 6BR with a factory 8-twist barrel. GREAT Load...
