6br Norma Freebore

I am in the process of building my first 6br Norma. It will be soley used for shooting Pdogs and paper with 75-87 gr vmax bullets. How much free bore should I go with on my Bartlien 10 twist barrel for these bullets?

I have a 10 twist .272 no-turn neck with .060" FB heavy varmint gun. I don't shoot paper at all. I have been shooting 55-75 grain VMAX and Noslers in it and it shoots better than I can. Could shoot 90's with it okay I think but that is pushing the envelope on the 10 twist at the velocities I load for. I wanted the wind bucking ability of the round and wide variety of bullets for just varmint shooting and don't care about super fast velocities. 3,000 fps makes the dogs go butt over tea kettle when hit and they are just as dead as with a bullet going 3,600 fps and the throat will last longer to boot. You don't need anymore than .060 FB with those bullets and some will say that is excessive. Might be but it shoots very well for me. Let us know how it shoots when finished. Not many of us 10 twist guys out there it seems.

My personal reamer has an .060 free bore which allows you to use bullets from 50-108 grains in an 8 twist. I use Berger 105 VLD's and have never felt I needed more freebore for more powder. Dave Kiff made both my reamers. The second was a bit longer freebore (I think a .105) but I sold that one and have chambered every barrel since with the .060.

Elkhunter,
You may want to take a look at doing a 6mmBR Remington, instead of the Norma. The Rem version has a signififcantly shorter throat, and may be a better fit to the lighter bullets you're wanting to use. The Norma chamber was wrapped around the 105s, specifically, meaning you're going to have a fair amount of freebore with the lighter bullets you've mentioned here.
