6br lapua brass???

Everyone

Kevin Thomas is right.
I have both the old & new "Blue Box" 6br brass Loaded with several brands of bullets,Berger,Fowler,Knight,Sierra,Barts, and the Neck OD of all my loaded brass (over 300 rounds) is .2672-.2675.
I shoot a 40X with a no turn neck .272 chamber.(Shoots low 2's & 1'S)
With the above mentioned kind of brass consistancy I'am thinking about a new barrel with a .260-270 neck. That should give me .003-.004 neck clearance.

FJIM: I'am not sure I'am ready to try a .268 neck but a .269 may be ok too. You make a good point about the .011 neck thickness. You have me thinking about turning a little. Which I really don't like doing.
I shoot a 6br for it's ability to get lapua brass work up a load and shoot Simplisicty.

Those numbers do not match my old Lapua cardboard box Lapua brass with Barts or Berger. Mine are right around 0.2690-0.2695. I recall that Kevin Thomas reported that the switch to the blue plastic box was independent from the dimension change. Perhaps you have cases with the new neck thickness but old box.

Just loaded 20 rounds of the new blue box Lapua, measured neck walls of .012" to .0125", and the loaded neck diameters are .2675" to .268". Should be fine for their intended use in a new 6BRX with a .270" chamber neck. If I want to use the old thicker brass, still have the option of a light clean up cut. :)

I bought one blue box and six boxes of the old stuff (ancient). The old cases have a .001" larger neck than the blue box cases but after a cleanup turn they both end up at the same loaded diameter - .267".
I first set my Sinclair Premium cutter to not touch the neck at all and then advanced one click at a time until the neck was completely clean.

i to have 272 no turn nk. chamber old brass measure 13&13.5 newblue box 12to 12.5 idont feel need to clean lapau up any but next chamber willbe a 268 or 269 have to roll with the punches iguess but all ie is not lost the snow here in mtn. tn. is up to my hindend &if ihad any more brass to turn iwould about do it for the heck of it shooter63 + some. enjoy discussions but do feel for people with reamers but we as shooters will ajust.

I have had to buy two blue box BR brass to make Dasher cases. I also checked neck wall thickness and found some under .012 but case length was even shorter than before, they run on an average 1.554..........jim

Couldnt PT&G just regrind the od of the neck area of the reamer.Seems it would be cheaper than rebuying the reamer over and over.

The darned shame of it is people that ordered a Kiff .272 Dasher no turn reamer , sent it to a gunsmith that had a new 6mm barrel and chambered it thinking that was the ticket, then got the barrel and found out his new project was undercut in the brass department. Barrel comes back, old brass is nonexistent on the market, and I'm thinking I just got something w/o a kiss. Anyone got neck thickness measurements on Norma brass or any other with a thicker neck?

I feel sorry for you fellas but I sure appreciate this thread as I just about ordered the wrong reamer for my 6brx. I called Dave Kiff yesterday got a reamer being built with a .269 n/k and .104 free bore again I am sorry for you fellas with with reamers that are going to need to be reground. If it would help one of you guys to finish your barrel off I think I have a full box of the old 6br brass if I do I would be willing to make a trade for some of the new brass if it would help one of you fellas out, or otherwise I will just trim a little more off and run it.
Wayne.

Besides the neck thickness issue the short length. Most chambers are 1.570 and the new brass i received was 1.554.......jim

areaone,
This is what Frank came up with @ the beginning of the thread.

Frank: Just measured my blue box Lapua 6BR with the older cardboard box, using one of my tubing mics. Blue box is .012" minimum to .0125" maximum. Lot number ?00517001. Can't fully read the first alphabet letter, the dark blue label is overtop the letter, could be a "B" or an "R". Older cardboard box measures .013" mimimum to .0135" maximum. Kevin is right on with his difference of .001".

Sorry, I guess I was not clear on my question. Does anyone have the specs on NORMA brass for 6 br, I know the difference between the blue and cardboard Lapua brass specs.
Thanks for any help. I have .272 no turn neck with bluebox brass. My loaded with 70 gr Sierra are .2675. Wish I had known this 8 mos. ago and would have went with a .270 neck.

Just got my 2 6brx barrels back from my smith Yesterday, and I put one barrel on my action and set head space last night. Loaded a dummy round with the 105 Berger hunting bullet. New blue box brass messures just as you have stated .2675. Everything chambers fine. Although I have not fired a shot yet. ??? I ordered the reamer with a .270 neck due to Lapua changing their neck wall thickness. IMO, and unless Laupa changes back to the .013 neck thickness. Witch from what I read they are not going to? So....The 272 no turn neck will now be a .270 No turn neck. It's what I have started calling it anyway ;D

Don't stress yourself too much about this change that Lapua has made! It May not hurt you as much as you think for your current specs. Post a WTB ad for cardborad box brass. Someone may have some they want to get rid of and you will have what you need. If not I don't think think a loaded round of .2675 in a 272 neck will Keep you from shooting very well! I did have a 308 barrel at one time that was a .342 neck and it shot best when using a .331 bushing! Go figure?? My point is Specs are just that! Specs! Doesn't always mean everything is going to work out just as planned. Adust your loading techniques to your specs and keep shooting!! You might be surprised how well the new blue box brass will shoot in a 272 neck. There is more than one way to skin a cat! .267 in a .272 neck is only .005 I have even read that some world class shooters prefer as much as .004 clearance in their necks. Your not as bad off as you think you are! Shoot the new brass in your rifle and enjoy it! Adust your loading specs to what the barrel and chamber itself is telling you it wants!

I think Mark just made the most sense of any post on this thread, Hope your new shoot stick is really a tac driver Mark, I got my two barrels delivered a few days ago and I should get my new 6brx reamer any day. My reamer has a .269 n/k and .104 free bore I think it should work fine.

Wayne,
I think you will be fine also! I went with the .112 free bore on my reamer, for the 105 Berger hunting bullet. Hoping it will allow me to seat the bullet just above the neck/shoulder junction with fire formed cases. We will see? If I ever get around to shooting the barrels? Some how I think I will! ;D My main foucus is else where at this point, but once I have some data I will get back to you.
